THE ILLUMINATED BORDERS OF ANGELO RASSU – Harvest Crittenden
Angelo Rassu was a gifted engrosser that flourished from the 1920s to the mid 1960s. What made Mr. Rassu so significant is that he used a color palette seldom used at the time. Angelo's work is full of plum, purple, teal, rose and olive green. Together with these colors Mr. Rassu did most of his gilding in silver, white gold or palladium. He also perfected a simplified white vining technique that worked perfectly with the other elements on his page. In this class we will be working on 3 different borders using a simplified white vine technique and other methods Mr. Rassu used in his work. We will carry on his tradition of using rich jewel tones. Each border will have silver, white gold, or palladium. Skill Level: All
Supplies: One sheet of Hot Press Watercolor Paper approx 8"x10" (PA82), pencil (PL03), ruler (S271), kneaded eraser (E09), Pigma marker (fine point) (M17) or black waterproof ink (I70) and pointed pen (H95, N70). One oz. of Instacoll (S892). (John Neal currently sells it at this size and will be more than enough.) A small container of distilled water. Gouache in a red, yellow, blue with black and white (WNG523, WNG524, WNG527, WNG512, WNG331). Any variations on these will be fine. A mixing palette (S679). A scruffy brush (BR43). A fine brush for painting (Size 00 or 0 works well.) (BR38, BR26) Paper towels. Water container (S784). A few pieces of drafting tape (S412). Scissors (S835). A fine embossing tool (S478). I will have many to share if you don't have one. Optional: a magnifier. There will be an $8.00 supply fee for 1/2 sheet of silver, 1/2 sheet of white gold and 1/2 sheet of palladium per student.

I70. Moon Palace Sumi Ink
Moon Palace Sumi
The Ink is now in a bottle with a Gold Label

While the packaging is a bit different, this is the highly sought after and highly recommended Japanese Sumi Ink. For both broad edge and pointed pen work. Dries waterproof. A great calligraphy ink.

"I like Moon Palace better, but both Moon Palace and Best Bottle are beautiful inks. The Moon Palace has a slight sheen to it, which I like. Michael suggested this ink to me so please tell him I said, "thank you". I just finished a job of 200 invitations with Moon Palace and the ink is beautiful. I did not dilute the ink.
A client just brought me invitations (slick paper) to address. This bride knew going into this that I probably couldn't do pointed pen. However, for fun, I tried the Sumi inks and to my surprise they worked pretty darn good. I usually have to use a sharpie on slick envelopes, yikes!!!"

--Clair F., Jan 2011.

Four sizes available:

2.0 oz (widemouthed jar)
6.0 oz (180ml)

S892. Instacoll Gold Size
S892. Instacoll (was item S479) Yellow color.

Available sizes:
1oz. or 3oz. wide-mouth jars
2oz. Nalgene dropper bottle
Bulk 1-liter bottle

Reggie Ezell, Harvest Crittenden, and Sheila Waters use this synthetic size for raised, mirror-finish gilding with gold leaf. They and many others have found it easier to use than traditional gesso made from slaked plaster. Yellow color allows you to see what you have applied.

Caution: Freezing adversely affects Instacoll. Those in the North or west of the Rockies should order during the warmer months.

BR26. W&N Sceptre Gold 101 Brush
W&N Sceptre Gold 101 Brush, Round, Short Handle

For fine detail, lines & washes. A traditional and popular head shape for all-purpose watercolor work. Can be used for broad strokes yet it will also form a sharp point. They possess excellent color holding capacity, sensitivity, spring and durability. Recommended by Michael Sull.

High quality brushes made from a mix of sable and synthetic fibres. They are ideal for watercolor and suitable for use with acrylic. For watercolor media, while today's synthetic brushes perform excellently, pure sable still has the edge. With a blend you can get performance that is close to sable at a price that is close to synthetic. The blend of hair in Sceptre Gold II also gives you added benefits. Sable hair has excellent spring while the high-quality synthetic filaments ensure that the brushes are soft enough to work the color but also have a strong snap so they return back to their original shape with ease. The high proportion of sable in Sceptre Gold II gives the brushes considerably more ability to make larger washes in one stroke than normal synthetic brushes, and the hairs are tapered to a fine point, giving the brush control for detailed work.
