EXPLORING WHITE VINE ILLUMINATION – Valerie Weilmuenster
White vine style illumination appeared in the 16th century and offers a unique and distinctive look. Like the title suggests the vine design is left white and the colors are painted in the background behind the vine and letter. These designs can be used for both vines and letters. This will be a hands-on painting class where students will be led in a step-by-step manner how to complete a vine and a letter using this style. Using a pre-printed worksheet, the basics of color mixing, painting and applying gold leaf will be covered. Skill Level: All
Supplies: Winsor Newton Gouache: Spectrum Red (WNG623), Red Ochre (WNG564), Ultramarine Blue (WNG660), Brilliant Green (WNG046), Permanent Green Deep (WNG482), Permanent White (WNG512). Grumbacher watercolor: (GW100) Prussian Blue, Lamp Black, Mauve. Winsor Newton Gold Ink (I56) (in a bottle). Gansi White (I118) (from John Neal) or you can use the Permanent White listed above. Mixing sticks. Three mixing trays with 6 compartments (S679), good quality sable brush – size 0 (Winsor Newton series 7) (BR28, BR38), synthetic brush–size 0 (for applying instacoll), 1 or 2 mixing brushes (BR43), double ended stylus (S478), pigma micron marker–size 1 (M17), eye dropper (S706), water containers (S784), wooden ruler with metal edge (S574), scissors (S835), 4 sheets of patent gold leaf (S189-5)(has backing sheet attached), instacoll size (S892) (helpful 1–2 ounce plastic storage container with lid to put size in.) 1 sheet of thin acetate (PS94) (like a page protector), agate burnisher (S194, S903) or agate stone. Magnifier eyeglasses helpful (S656).

Valerie recommends these books for illumination, but they are not specific to this class.

BR28. W&N Series #7 Watercolor Brush
Series 7 fulfills the essential qualities that define the finest watercolor brush for artists: Point: The brush comes to a crisp point which is maintained during use. Snap & Spring: The brush snaps crisply back into shape with the right degree of spring to allow the artist superior control between the brush and painting surface. Flow Control: The color flows evenly and consistently from the point, with enough color carrying capacity in the belly of the brush to allow flowing gestural strokes. For artists who appreciate exquisite quality and longevity, there is no other brush than the Series 7. Today, just as in 1866, the Series 7 is made for those who understand that the quality of the brush will be reflected in the quality of their work.
