THE FLOURISHED MONOGRAM – Kathy Milici
Webster's dictionary defines a monogram as an effective and visually attractive arrangement of two or more letters, no longer separate, becoming a symbol or sign, which conveys personal significance. Originally a contraction of a formal name, early monograms were found as far back as the 5th century, and were later popular among royalty, nobility, and as part of heraldry. In Victorian times, monograms were used on fine linens, stationery, jewelry, and other personal belongings. Today, monogram design remains popular as ever—from commercial use as trademarks, symbols, and as part of branding to personal use in stationery and wedding themed design. In this workshop, we will first look at some famous monograms and what makes them so visually successful. Then, as we develop our own designs (from simple to more complex) using step-by-step instructions, we will explore the 'elasticity' of letters, learning how to bend, modify, repeat, stretch, overlap and interlock lines to create well balanced, useful and visually beautiful monograms. From a pencil sketch to finished "inked" designs, and working with shapes such as spirals, cameos, shields and diamonds, you will be guided through the interplay of patterns and textures as you develop and design your own images that are fit to be crowned in royalty! Skill Level: Open to all levels; a basic knowledge of pointed pen/broad pen styles is helpful.

Supplies: Straight pen holder (H62, H63) and/or oblique pen holder (H95), your favorite pointed pen nibs (recommended are Nikko G, Zebra G, Gillott 303/404, Hunt 22) (N113, N118, N72, N74, N93), your favorite broad pen nibs in various sizes (recommended are Speedball (N09) C-2, C-3, C-4, or Mitchell/Brause equivalents (N04, N02)), Higgins Eternal Ink (I08) or Sumi Moon Palace Black Ink (I70), Dinky Dip or ink well/holder (S934, S853), 12" clear plastic ruler (S798), pencil, kneaded eraser (E09), small dropper bottle with water (S897-2). Paper: 10 sheets of tracing paper (P43), (4 squares per inch is fine), Borden and Riley Boris Marker Layout pad (P10-50), 9" X 12" or Canson Marker ProLayout pad (P32-9), 9" X 12" or Borden and Riley Cotton Comp pad (P39), 9" X 12". Paper towels. Optional: Small compass, Scotch removable tape.

I70. Moon Palace Sumi Ink
Moon Palace Sumi
The Ink is now in a bottle with a Gold Label

While the packaging is a bit different, this is the highly sought after and highly recommended Japanese Sumi Ink. For both broad edge and pointed pen work. Dries waterproof. A great calligraphy ink.

"I like Moon Palace better, but both Moon Palace and Best Bottle are beautiful inks. The Moon Palace has a slight sheen to it, which I like. Michael suggested this ink to me so please tell him I said, "thank you". I just finished a job of 200 invitations with Moon Palace and the ink is beautiful. I did not dilute the ink.
A client just brought me invitations (slick paper) to address. This bride knew going into this that I probably couldn't do pointed pen. However, for fun, I tried the Sumi inks and to my surprise they worked pretty darn good. I usually have to use a sharpie on slick envelopes, yikes!!!"

--Clair F., Jan 2011.

S853. Jumbo Dinky Dip
S853. Jumbo Dinky Dip.

Similar to our Screw-Top Small Dinky Dip (S934), but with larger screw-top jars (1/2 oz) and a larger unfinished wooden base.

Choose your base shape:
1-Square (1 jar) 2.75"x2.75"
4-Square (4 jars): 3.5"x3.5"
4-Rectangle (4 jars): 1.5"x6.5"

The bases are made so that the jars fit tightly in their holes, but also made so you can remove the jars. To remove a jar, you might need to wiggle the jar back and forth while pulling. It can take some effort. Of course, you will want to make sure the lid is screwed on well before starting to remove the jar. When replacing a jar -- if you want it to be removable again -- push it into the hole just enough for it to be secure, but not as deep as it will go.

Jar inside dimensions: approximately 28mm dia. x 25mm high

Refills: S844 or S856

S897-2. Nalgene 2-ounce Dropper Bottle.

Also available in a 1/2oz bottle: S897-1/2

Use these leak-proof bottles for airtight storage. They allow you to use liquids without having to open wide a container, making them great for fluids that become useless if they dry out. Harvest Crittenden uses them to store and dispense Instacoll. She can decant a bulk container into these bottles, and it does not dry out (a problem with the wide-mouth containers). You can also now purchase Instacoll already in the 2 oz size (see item code S892).

P39. Cotton Comp Pad
October 2019: Both sizes of this pad are out of stock. Any backorders will be cancelled. For a similar pad please see P32 Canson Pro Marker Layout.

This layout pad from Borden & Riley is 100% Rag Marker with a very smooth finish. The paper takes ink without bleeding or feathering. With these great qualities, this pad is a step-up from the regular Marker Layout. 50 sheets.

"The Cotton Comp paper is now my favorite, as it is more
translucent and letters can be traced through it more easily than through layout paper, yet it has more substance than tracing paper."
-- Sheila Waters. Cyberscribes, January 2008.

Choose size: 9x12 or 11x14.
