Marian Gault

1  2

This class will be a survey of the Chancery Cursive Italic hand, which developed during the Renaissance and was used in the chanceries of the Vatican for correspondence and writing legal documents. There are many variations of standard Italic found in modern calligraphy which is now produced with an edged pen, but in the time of Arrighi and Cataneo, everything was written with a quill pen cut with a chisel edge. Chancery Cursive style was taught extensively throughout Europe. The formation of both lower and upper case letters will be demonstrated. How they differ from more or less standard Italic will be pointed out and explained. This elegant hand has many uses, and appropriate flourishes can easily be added, resulting in beautifully designed and stunning lettering. Familiarity with the use of an edged pen is very helpful. Explanatory handouts and guide sheets will be provided. Skill Level: All

Supplies: Straight nib holder (not oblique)(H62, H89); Nib: Speedball C-3 or equivalent nib (N09, N02, N04), Parallel Pen equivalent size is o.k.(FP67); Ink: Higgins Eternal (I08), Moon Palace(I70), walnut ink(I53-2.5), or any that works for you, your choice of color; Paper: Borden & Riley Boris (P10-100) or Cotton Comp pad (P39), or any paper that works for you and guidelines can be seen through it; Miscellaneous: tissues or paper towels, water container, your attention, and smile often.

I do not have a specific book recommendations for Chancery Cursive Italic, but I recommend the following books, which I use all the time –Marian
B2132. Calligraphy by Claude Mediavilla. Hardcover $150.00
B2769. Foundations of Calligraphy by Sheila Waters. Hardcover. $35.00
B2811. The Art and Craft of Hand Lettering by Annie Cicale. Paper $19.95
B145. The Zanerian Manual. $39.95
B2982. SCRIBE: Artist of the Written Word by John Stevens. Hardcover $49.95

H62. Mahogany Pen Holder
Straight wood calligraphy penholder.

How do I insert a calligraphy nib into a penholder that has a metal ring and four prongs?

H89. Tachikawa T40 (Multi) Pen Holder
This holder from Japanese company Tachikawa is a high-quality, lightweight wood. The holder has a rubber finger grip and uses the plastic collar system to hold the nibs. It will hold the following broad edge nibs: Mitchell, Speedball, Tape, Tachikawa. It will not hold Brause nibs; they are too loose.

One neat feature: this holder has a plastic cap to fit over the nib (and the cap can be posted while you are using the holder!). That way, you can leave the nib in the pen and not worry that it will get damaged.

Total length (excluding cap) is 5.75 inches, width is about 1/2 inch thick.

Made in Japan.

I08. Higgins Eternal Ink
I08. Higgins Eternal Ink.

A non-waterproof, carbon black ink for dip pens. Our most popular ink for classes. Recommended for copperplate (add a few drops of gum arabic). Perhaps the best ink for calligraphy for a beginner; it will cause the beginner the fewest problems. This ink will bleed more readily than other inks. If bleeding is a problem, try Sumi Inks. 2.5 oz.

Quantity discounts start at 6 & 12.

"For broad-pen writing, I add gouache to Higgins Eternal. Gouache gives Eternal some needed body. It doesn't necessarily have to be black gouache. Indigo or a dark red add an interesting hue to the result. In a quarter ounce of Eternal, I add about a 3/8-inch bead of gouache from a tube. Eternal doesn't give me the hairlines I want in pointed pen work, so for that I much prefer iron gall or walnut ink". - Bob Hurford

I70. Moon Palace Sumi Ink
Moon Palace Sumi
The Ink is now in a bottle with a Gold Label

While the packaging is a bit different, this is the highly sought after and highly recommended Japanese Sumi Ink. For both broad edge and pointed pen work. Dries waterproof. A great calligraphy ink.

"I like Moon Palace better, but both Moon Palace and Best Bottle are beautiful inks. The Moon Palace has a slight sheen to it, which I like. Michael suggested this ink to me so please tell him I said, "thank you". I just finished a job of 200 invitations with Moon Palace and the ink is beautiful. I did not dilute the ink.
A client just brought me invitations (slick paper) to address. This bride knew going into this that I probably couldn't do pointed pen. However, for fun, I tried the Sumi inks and to my surprise they worked pretty darn good. I usually have to use a sharpie on slick envelopes, yikes!!!"

--Clair F., Jan 2011.
