Mastering Copperplate Calligraphy: A Step-by-Step Manual by Eleanor Winters. 1989. 192pp. 8.25" x 11". Paper.

A self-contained manual for serious students, including beginners. Part One places Copperplate in historical context. Part Three deals with writing in color and the design and execution of simple projects, such as envelopes and small poems.

B255. Universal Penman / Bickham
B255 The Universal Penman by George Bickham. (1741) 1954. 212pp. 9"x13.75". Paper.

212 pages done by a number of English master penmen of the 1700s, all engraved by Bickham. Shows a variety of Copperplate hands in a variety of sizes. Much non-pictorial flourishing. This is not an instructional manual, but for the study of letterforms this is the best historical source book.

Your Price $22.95

B3116. Technique of Copperplate Calligraphy / Turner
The Technique of Copperplate Calligraphy by Gordon Turner. 1987. 42pp. 8.25x11". Paper.

This instruction book is good for self-learners or use with an instructor as a supplemental book. The author covers the basic strokes for lowercase, the most used stroke for capitals. Up to six alternate forms are given for capitals. Drawing guidelines and making an oblique pen are included. (For more thorough instruction purchase B1109. Mastering Copperplate Calligraphy by Eleanor Winters.)
The text of this book is all written in the hand being taught. This makes for a beautiful book and you get to see how the hand is to look in use.

Your Price $7.95

E09. Kneaded Rubber Eraser
Kneaded Rubber Eraser.

Used to erase pencil (graphite). Cherryl Moote suggested it for removing the white lines from a white lead mechanical pencil.

H96. Black Comfort Grip Adjusted Holder
This comfort-grip, black plastic, "hourglass" holder with an oblique brass flange is a great improvement over the Speedball Oblique Holder. The flange is tilted to decrease the angle of the nib to the paper, making your upstrokes less likely to catch on the paper and the flange is pre-adjusted for our most popular nibs.

This holder does not include a nib.

Choose nib adjustment: 66EF (Brause 66EF), 303 (Gillott 303), PRIN (Principal EF), NIKK (Nikko G).

I08. Higgins Eternal Ink
I08. Higgins Eternal Ink.

A non-waterproof, carbon black ink for dip pens. Our most popular ink for classes. Recommended for copperplate (add a few drops of gum arabic). Perhaps the best ink for calligraphy for a beginner; it will cause the beginner the fewest problems. This ink will bleed more readily than other inks. If bleeding is a problem, try Sumi Inks. 2.5 oz.

Quantity discounts start at 6 & 12.

"For broad-pen writing, I add gouache to Higgins Eternal. Gouache gives Eternal some needed body. It doesn't necessarily have to be black gouache. Indigo or a dark red add an interesting hue to the result. In a quarter ounce of Eternal, I add about a 3/8-inch bead of gouache from a tube. Eternal doesn't give me the hairlines I want in pointed pen work, so for that I much prefer iron gall or walnut ink". - Bob Hurford

I70. Moon Palace Sumi Ink
Moon Palace Sumi
The Ink is now in a bottle with a Gold Label

While the packaging is a bit different, this is the highly sought after and highly recommended Japanese Sumi Ink. For both broad edge and pointed pen work. Dries waterproof. A great calligraphy ink.

"I like Moon Palace better, but both Moon Palace and Best Bottle are beautiful inks. The Moon Palace has a slight sheen to it, which I like. Michael suggested this ink to me so please tell him I said, "thank you". I just finished a job of 200 invitations with Moon Palace and the ink is beautiful. I did not dilute the ink.
A client just brought me invitations (slick paper) to address. This bride knew going into this that I probably couldn't do pointed pen. However, for fun, I tried the Sumi inks and to my surprise they worked pretty darn good. I usually have to use a sharpie on slick envelopes, yikes!!!"

--Clair F., Jan 2011.

Four sizes available:

2.0 oz (widemouthed jar)
6.0 oz (180ml)
15 oz

N113. Nikko G Nib
N113. Nikko G Nib.

These nibs from Japan are hand cut, extremely smooth, and long-lasting. They are chrome plated and have a medium flex. Great for Spencerian. Smooth writing with no burrs or scratchiness. Highly recommended by Michael Sull.

N72. Gillott 303 Nib
N72. Gillott 303 Pointed Nib.

A popular nib for Copperplate. Good flexibility - not too stiff, not too flexible. Very thin hairlines and good swells. Works for scripts 3/16-1/16". Sharp point but will work on slightly textured surfaces. Tends to catch on upstrokes.

Your Price $1.19

N74. Gillott 404 Nib
N74. Gillott 404 Nib.

The Gillott 404 is a popular, sturdy nib. It is long-lasting, fairly stiff nib, and suitable for writing at x-heights from 3/16" to 1/4", on all surfaces from smooth to textured. It is a good choice for beginners (or those with a heavy hand.) Because they require more pressure to create the swells, stiffer nibs are easier to control. With thicker hairlines others, The Gillott 404 is a good choice for work for reproduction. The Gillott 404 is stiffer and less sharp than the Gillott 303 and Gillott 170.

Recommended by Eleanor Winters in her Mastering Copperplate Calligraphy (B1109) for beginners and professionals because they "provide fine line quality without being too fragile." Satisfactory for Spencerian Script.

The nib is part of the JNB Pointed Nib Samplers. The nib is also available in a longer-writing Ink Cage version.

Discounted quantity prices at 10 and at 144.
