USING RUNES IN TEXT ART DESIGN
The purpose of this six-week course is to teach the use of runic symbols as a design element, allowing the artist to use Elder Futhark more comfortably while absorbing some of the history and charm that surrounds these ancient symbols. Early examples of Norse Runes are at least 2,000 years old, though their origins must be much more distant in time. Knowing more of these early root signs and symbols provides a certain stabilizing force in our present-day digital world, where even the ubiquitous Bluetooth logo has brought runic forms into common usage.

This class is highly interactive with exercises throughout, with an extensive body of reference material for download. Students first learn the names of the runes, their meanings, the phonetic equivalents, and how to transliterate a text into runes. Then we can begin to write with them using a variety of tools, media, and techniques. Course activities include constructing the 24 symbols of Elder Futhark on a consistent grid; designing runes as word, monogram, and pattern; creating a runic broadside; and developing an individual and experimental layered page. Ink, colored pencil, resist, and watercolor techniques–as well as a variety of pens, brushes, and other media–build gradually toward developing more complexity and range of expression.

This course is open to students of all experience levels. Projects are simple and straightforward, with great potential, and evolving one step at a time. Even left-handed scribes can enjoy producing these user-friendly monoline forms!

Students must purchase their own art supplies for this course, the cost of which will depend on students’ individual needs.
