Some of the most exciting commissions of my 35-year career have been wall texts: calligraphy and lettering for buildings, exhibitions, installations, and more. It is time for me to share with you all the techniques that I have developed over the years. We will look at specific projects, seeing which approaches best suited the situation. You will learn how to prepare a studio-sized panel on which to practice various techniques, including brush script (pointed and flat), built-up lettering, and stenciling. We will look at design and layout; choosing the right lettering style; and how to mark out a wall before you begin. You may be thinking, “I’ll never paint on a building!” But the techniques you learn here can be applied to any number of projects, large and small.

We will discuss materials in the first lesson, so you do not need to buy your materials before the lesson.

  • Plywood panel measuring roughly 100cm x 100cm (approximately 40" x 40"), the bigger the better, prepared with three coats of white gesso or white wall paint. This will be your practice surface.
  • Variety of brushes (flat brushes and pointed brushes)
  • Pencil, ruler, masking tape (PL38) (S270) (S412)
  • Gouache (WNG1, WNG2, WNG3, WNG4), acrylic matte medium (Pebeo matte medium brand is best)
