These are small, precise synthetic sable brushes for precise tasks. They are superb for fine detail in watercolor, as well as gouache, acrylic and oil. The wooden handles are specially finished to allow a comfortable but firm grip and ultimate control. The finest synthetic sable assures perfect pointing. The Linger Brush has long fibers, the Monogram Brush shorter ones.

For fine detail, lines & washes. A traditional and popular head shape for all-purpose water color work. Can be used for broad strokes yet it will also form a sharp point. They possess excellent color holding capacity, sensitivity, spring and durability.

N33. Haff (Thomas Hoyer) Ruling Pen. A fine crafted, traditional ruling pen. 5"; nickel-plated tool steel alloy. From Germany. Thomas Hoyer has introduced the tool at several conferences and workshops in the USA and Europe. He and others use this ruling pen for expressive lettering. Rosemary Buczek uses a traditional ruling pen like this for drawing lines. $22.50

S478. Double Ended Ball Stylus. Two tips with different sized balls. Judy Melvin uses this tool in her "Walnut and Sumi Inks & Embossing" technique described in Art Expose (B3044, $14.95). Rosemary Buczek uses it to score patterns in the gold. $2.99

Thomas Hoyer Ruling Pen, Haff Ruling Pen (629 U)

Thomas Hoyer uses this fine-crafted, traditional ruling pen for expressive lettering. 5"overall length; nickel-plated tool steel alloy. Both Thomas and this ruling pen come from Germany. He has introduced the tool as a writing instrument at several conferences and workshops in the USA and Europe. This ruling pen was sold by HAFF as their number 629U. These are now coming from the manufacturer, a small family firm, which has given us more options for handles.

This ruling pen is now available in a range of handle materials. The Black Aladdinite has more heft than the Black Plastic (The writing part is identical in each.)

*Aladdinite is a sustainable manufactured material made using milk protein. It was invented in the early 20th century and was used for a wide variety of items (including jewelry) before the invention of plastic derived from petroleum. It is most commonly used now for buttons.

W&N Sceptre Gold 101 Brush, Round, Short Handle

For fine detail, lines & washes. A traditional and popular head shape for all-purpose watercolor work. Can be used for broad strokes yet it will also form a sharp point. They possess excellent color holding capacity, sensitivity, spring and durability. Recommended by Michael Sull.

High quality brushes made from a mix of sable and synthetic fibres. They are ideal for watercolor and suitable for use with acrylic. For watercolor media, while today's synthetic brushes perform excellently, pure sable still has the edge. With a blend you can get performance that is close to sable at a price that is close to synthetic. The blend of hair in Sceptre Gold II also gives you added benefits. Sable hair has excellent spring while the high-quality synthetic filaments ensure that the brushes are soft enough to work the color but also have a strong snap so they return back to their original shape with ease. The high proportion of sable in Sceptre Gold II gives the brushes considerably more ability to make larger washes in one stroke than normal synthetic brushes, and the hairs are tapered to a fine point, giving the brush control for detailed work.

Reggie Ezell, Harvest Crittenden, and Sheila Waters use this synthetic size for raised, mirror-finish gilding with gold leaf. They and many others have found it easier to use than traditional gesso made from slaked plaster. Yellow color allows you to see what you have applied.

Caution: Freezing adversely affects Instacoll. Those in the North or west of the Rockies should order during the warmer months.
