Beginning Calligraphy II (italic) class – June 1 through August 3
Cheryl Tefft

Classic italic with its many variations is by far the most popular of the broad-edge calligraphy styles. Italic can take on a multitude of attributes, ranging from elegantly flourished to bold and chunky. Italic offers the very best balance between beauty and legibility in the entire world of calligraphy.

In this class you will explore the wonders of learning to write in the lovely italic style, while refining your understanding of the underlying fundamentals of calligraphy. We will cover the nuances of the italic letterforms, proportions, spacing, some special skills (rolling the pen!), and even some fun exercises with decorated letters that offer a lot of enjoyment and impressive results even without a lot of experience.

This class is the second in a series of four courses in calligraphy designed to take complete novices from terrified to terrific! If you have already taken the instructor's Beginning Calligraphy I (uncial) class, this italic class is the next step. It is also suitable for those who have studied italic before and would like to feel more confident with it. You only need to be reasonably comfortable with any broad-edge calligraphy style.

PREREQUISITE: Beginning Calligraphy I (uncial), from this instructor, or a comprehensive course in any other style of broad-edge calligraphy, such as italic, blackletter, bookhand, or Carolingian (or the equivalent in independent study).

WHEN: Wednesdays, June 1 through August 3, 2022, from noon to 2 pm Central Daylight Time (1 pm to 3 pm Eastern Daylight Time) (no class on June 22 or July 13)

FORMAT/RECORDINGS: This is a live small-group class with individual feedback, held online with recordings available afterward for all students enrolled.

FEE: $290

  • Optional: Dedicated tote bag/briefcase (or similar) to keep all of your class supplies and papers together (note that your supplies will include an 11×17” pad of paper, so your bag needs to accommodate that)
  • Optional (but highly recommended): Pilot Parallel Pen, 2.4 mm size (yellow-orange cap) (FP67)
  • Optional: One or two additional LARGE sheets of smooth, non-bleeding watercolor paper for projects; it is okay to cut large sheets into quarters for shipping (in addition to the papers on the “required” part of the list, you may want more or a different kind of paper for your projects, such as a large sheet of one of the other types of paper from the sample pack)
  • Sample paper pack of high-quality calligraphy-friendly paper samples (PA101). Only needed if you don't already know what types of white/off-white watercolor paper you like for finished calligraphy projects. However, if you don't get the sample pack, you are encouraged to get some Arches Text Wove paper for a special in-class project (PS01, PS01-PKT, PS01-FS, or PA03) (you only need one letter-size sheet of the Text Wove for class, and you can substitute another kind of watercolor paper instead; you may also want more Text Wove paper later).
