Illuminated Letters - October 2019

The Toolbox for Illuminated Letters
  • Layout paper - a good typing paper or copy paper will do. Boris Riley Marker paper is a good choice, or a marker layout paper. (P09-50)
  • A fine line black marker - Pigma Micron Size .005 waterproof, or Staedtler pigment liner - waterproof .005. I prefer a Rapidograph by Kohinoor with waterproof ink. or a Pilot G-Tec C4 (M17, M08)
  • Ruling pen - if you have one - not the folded ruling pen - I will have some available (N22, N208)
  • Pencils, and Erasers (PL38, E13)
  • Ruler clear with grid - with beveled edge. If it doesn't have a beveled edge, bring two. (S871)
  • Paper Towels (S817)
  • A small T-Square could be handy, but not necessary(S753)
  • Penholders -and nibs - various sizes of broad edged Mitchells, or Speedballs, and 1 fine point - Ef 66 or a crow quill or your favorite pointed pen nib (H129, N04, N09, N70, N75, H75)
  • Embossing tool - double ended - fine point (S478)
  • Glassine - save the glassine windows from your envelopes - though unused glassine is better. (PA94-SQ, PS94)
  • Dr. Martin's Bleed Proof White or Pro White (I38, I62)
  • Mixing palette, Water container (S679, S1005)
  • Mixing brushes - can be scruffy (BR43)
  • Pointed brushes - Winsor Newton Series 7 size 1, and 2/0 - or a good quality fine pointed brush - Princeton Monogram 20/0 (BR28, BR48)
  • Options: Fine point markers in gold or silver - if you want to add some sparkle (M76)

You have a choice of either Gouache or Water Color, or both:
  • Gouache A double primary selection- Cool Red (Alizarine), Warm Red (Cad red), Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Lemon Yellow, Cad Yellow medium , burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, and burnt umber. (WNGPDP-S)
  • Watercolors - double primary - Cool Red (Alizarine), Warm Red (Cad red), Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Lemon Yellow, Cad Yellow medium , burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, and burnt umber, zinc white (WNWC1, WNWC2, WNWC3, WNWC4)
  • OR: Cobalt Blue, Aurelian, Alizarin Crimson, burnt sienna, burnt umber. Permanent White Gouache, and zinc white (WNG1, WNG2, WNG3, WNG4)

Good paper to work on. Either paper is fine.
  • Water color paper Arches- hot pressed 140 lb., cut 5 sheets to 5 x 7, or a similar quality hot press paper. (PS47, PA47-57)
  • Rives BFK, cut 3 sheets to 5 x 7. (PS107)
