"All art aspires towards the condition of music." These are the words of Carl Andre, an American minimalist artist recognized mainly for his large public artworks. The words capture my on-going interest in the relationship between poetry, music, and calligraphy. Our work will be a continuation and hopefully an expansion of the exercises and investigations of recent workshops. The ideas of Hans Burgert, which have played a roll in the recent classes will be a part of our research, in particular his plea to think of letters as graphic forms and not letterforms. I wish to make the absurd link between this thought and asemic writing, which is an apt description for most "expressive calligraphy works." With this in mind, and some play with music and poetry, we will make some visual calligraphic works. I am interested also in discussions about what roll calligraphy plays in relationship to making words visual. The participants input in the class is extremely important. Someone has to be responsible for making sense of this.

  • Bring some poetry (not your own) but something contemporary if possible, and more importantly perhaps, poems that are complex and that you don't understand.

  • PENS:
    • ruling pens (N22, N31, N155)
    • cola pen (or materials for making one: cola can, tape, scissors, wooden dowel)
    • automatic pens (no. 4 or 5) (N27), a variety of smaller sized edged pens (N02, N04). B-series Speedball pen maybe B-1, B-3, B-0 (N16).
    • Zig Calligraphy markers Dual-tipped (2 mm and 5 mm) Black and one color of your choice(M06)
    • Black ink (Japanese or Chinese Sumi is preferable, but the black that you normally use is OK) (I70)
    • Bring whatever brushes you already have. A flat edged brush about 1/2" wide is something that might be useful. (BR01)
    • Rives BFK or Arches text wove, or something like these two, are options. 5 or 6 sheets (20" x 30"). (PS01, PS91, PS105)
    • A pad of Drawing Paper 18" x 24" (Strathmore drawing 400 series (24 sheets) is a good option (P100)
    • Sewing Thread and 4 needles (S825, S219)
    • water container (S992, S1005)
    • paper towels or rags (S817)
    • tape ( at least 1" wide)
    • scissors (S835)
    • pencils(S142)
    • erasers (E22, E13)
    • straight edge (S271, S871)
    • Any brushes you already have
    • small pieces of mat board that could be used as a wide pen
    • A soft pencil, from the B series, B-1, 2, or 3
    • Colors only if you have them..3 to 4 tubes of water color (a red, blue, yellow, black) and tube of white gouache
    • A few scraps of collage material (colored pieces of paper, etc) and some glue or paste

PS91. Rives BFK Paper (250 gsm)
    Rives BFK 22"x30"

This printmaking papers has set the standard for every mouldmade grade manufactured in Europe.

Perhaps its best quality is its consistency. Made with 100% cotton and no optical brightening agents, it is a bright white, smooth, soft and pliable sheet. Dimensionally stable, BFK Rives is a versatile substrate with an absorbent wove surface that is suitable for all forms of printmaking. The paper works well with inks and is heavy enough for washes and watercolor. Mouldmade in France. Grain direction is parallel to underlined dimension.

100% Cotton. pH neutral. White. 250gsm. 2 natural deckles, 2 tear deckles.

This paper ships separately from books/supplies and requires an extra shipping fee which is NOT included in the price of this product. Add item 'PS00' to your cart after adding large sheets of paper. (click to read details)
