Spencerian Script

BEGINNING SPENCERICAN SCRIPT – Bill Kemp

This workshop is designed for both beginners and experienced students. The workshop will look into the beautiful script that was developed by Platt Rogers Spencer in the earlier 1800's. Mr. Spencer developed this script to follow the gracefulness of the natural forms of nature. The workshop will focus on the lower case letters in the morning and go into the beautiful capital letters that truly make this script elegant and beautiful. This script is based on 4 simple principals and 7 stroke forms. Written mostly with the oblique pen holder but not restricted in using it, some use a straight holder including left-handers. This script is a true American hand.

SKILL LEVEL: Open to All.

SUPPLIES:
  • Nikko G or Zebra G are my recommended nibs for beginners. The advanced student will want to use the nib that is their favorite, and some prefer a more flexible nib. (N113, N118)
  • Left-hands may wish to try both a straight and oblique pen holder, to truly see which would work best for them (H113, H114).
  • McCaffery's Black or Old World Iron Gall inks are suggested for this class and others (I37, I116).
  • Paper to use is a good translucent layout paper such as Borden & Riley, Canson or Claire Fontane, that you will be able to see guild lines through (P09-100, P32, P36).

Guild sheets are available through our vendor for the conference.
