P32. Canson Pro-Layout Marker Pad
Canson Pro-Layout Marker Pad. Bright White, 18lb, marker layout pad. 50 sheets.

Our highest quality layout paper for calligraphy practice or work for reproduction. The very smooth surface does not buckle, even with wide chisel nibs. Black guidelines under the sheet are easily seen, even without a light table. Michael Sull's favorite pad for work for reproduction. His recommendation is echoed by other scribes and penmen: "Absolutely wonderful." "A great pad." It is worth the price.

Choose 9x12, 11x14, or 14x17 inches.

Formerly P32-9, P32-11, & P32-14

P09-50. Boris Layout Pad 50 Sheets
Boris Layout Pad
Bright White Felt Marker Layout Pad (#37). 50 sheets.

A smooth, translucent sheet that is highly recommended. No bleeding or feathering. Popular for beginning classes, and for copperplate for reproduction. Our most popular pad. From Borden & Riley.

Choose 9x12, 11x14, or 14x17 inches.

For tracing, Cotton Comp pads are recommended. Cotton Comp is easier to see through than the Boris Layout Pad.

Formerly P10-50, P11-50, & P12-50

P01-8. JNB Copperplate / Engrossers Pad 8.5X11in
P01-8. JNB Graph Pad with Slant Lines for Copperplate. 24lb bond.
8.5" x 11". Approx. 50 sheets.
Slant lines - 55-degree angle

Smooth paper for pointed pen. The paper takes the ink well and does not bleed or feather with most inks. (We tested with Higgins Eternal, Noodler's, McCaffery's, and Richtone Colors.) The smooth surface helps avoid pen catches on upstrokes.

Approx. 50 sheets with a blue grid and slanted lines for copperplate, 8 squares/inch. Grid may show up with some copiers. This pad takes the place of copperplate guidelines.

This paper is available in Blank Pads (see items P20 and P25).
For an 11"x17" Copperplate Graph Pad, use code P01-11
For a regular 11"x17" graph pad for broad-edged penwork, use code P72 (Gilbert Graph Pad)

H96. Black Comfort Grip Adjusted Holder
This comfort-grip, black plastic, "hourglass" holder with an oblique brass flange is a great improvement over the Speedball Oblique Holder. The flange is tilted to decrease the angle of the nib to the paper, making your upstrokes less likely to catch on the paper and the flange is pre-adjusted for our most popular nibs.

This holder does not include a nib.

Choose nib adjustment: 66EF (Brause 66EF), 303 (Gillott 303), PRIN (Principal EF), NIKK (Nikko G).

Click HERE to see which other nibs each adjustment will fit.

H114. Turned Wood Oblique Holder
H114. Turned Wood Oblique Holder.

The Ornamental Wood Holder has intricate ornamental turnings inspired by those on the Century Penholders. Color of holder varies.
The Tapered Wood Holder has a finely tapered classic shape. All Tapered are the same dark brown/black color.
The Ebony Wood Holder has the same design as the Ornamental version but is made out of a very dark (almost black) African hardwood. This version is slightly heavier than the other versions.
The Zanerian Wood Holder is made using the same wood (and colors) as the Ornamental version. The Zanerian design is a very slim shaft with a small finial on the tip.

Each style has the standard brass flange (fitted for the Nikko G nib) and overall length of 6.5-6.75".

Quantity discount for 12 or more.

N93. Hunt 22 Nib (22B)
Hunt 22 Extra Fine

A very popular and dependable bronze-finish nib that is great for Copperplate, Spencerian, and other pointed-pen scripts. The Hunt 22 has good flexibility -- not too flexible, not too stiff and can produce very thin hairlines and good swells. The nib works for x-heights of 3/16"-1/16". It has a sharp point but will work on slightly textured surfaces, though it will have a tendency to catch on upstrokes on those papers. Compared to the Gillott 303, the Hunt 22 point is less sharp, and it has more stiffness, so more pressure will be required to create thick shades (swells).

Hunt 22 is used by both beginners and professional scribes. HUNT EXTRA FINE 22 is stamped on the nib. The nib is sometimes called Hunt 22B. This nib is part of the JNB Pointed Nib Samplers (N154 and N117-1).

For more information about Hunt pointed nibs, click here.

Vintage Hunt 22 nibs (N93-V) are also available. When they were made, many decades ago, a higher quality of steel and craftmanship was employed in nib manufacture. They have similar characteristics, but are of a better quality.

N77. Hunt 101 Nib
Hunt 101 Imperial.

A very steady and durable nib, the Hunt 101 is a great choice for projects that require larger writing with x-heights above 1/4". It can be used on most paper surfaces, though it can have a tendency to catch on the upstroke when used on a rougher surface. The Hunt 101 requires firm and deliberate pressure to open swells, while its strength and steadiness makes it an ideal selection for student practice. Bronze finish.

N81. Hiro / Leonardt #40 Nib (Blue Pumpkin)
N81. Hiro / Leonardt #40 Nib (Blue Pumpkin)

The Hiro #40 Nib (Blue Pumpkin) nib no longer has "Hiro" stamped on it; instead it is now stamped "Leonardt."

One of our most popular nibs for Copperplate. Large, durable nib appropriate for writing at x-heights of 3/16" to 1/8". Hairlines are fine and uniform, upstrokes smooth.
Sometimes called Leonard Steno or Manuscript Steno.

The quality of this nib matches the low price. For a higher-quality version of this nib, see N90. Brause Steno Nib.

Your Price $0.75

N70. Brause 66EF Nib
EF66 Brause pointed-pen nib

A very popular and versatile nib for Copperplate and Modern Calligraphy. It is very flexible and can provide great contrast between thin and thick strokes. Moderate pressure will produce swells, and by pressing harder, bold strokes are possible. With its fine hairlines, the nib works for very small writing, to a 1/8-inch x-height. This nib is of consistent manufacture (defective nibs are rare). It tends to catch less on upstrokes than other extra-fine pointed nibs, making it more suitable for papers with some texture. This nib is well-suited for intermediate and advanced calligraphers, but it is not recommended for beginners. Because of its shape, it is also called Arrow Nib.

Linda Schneider's favorite pointed nib is the Brause 66EF. It is the one she uses most often; she says it is "tiny, but mighty." She notes how it writes longer on one dip than most larger nibs (it may be small, but it holds a lot of ink) and that its flexibility allows for especially nice thicks. With the Brause 66EF she can get the "tiniest of hairlines and beautiful swells."

The nib's shaft has a tight curvature and needs a specially adjusted oblique holder. These oblique penholders are available adjusted specifically for the Brause 66EF:
H115. Adjusted Turned Wood Oblique Holder
H96. Black Oblique Plastic Holder (Comfort-Grip)
H130. Blue Oblique Plastic Holder (Comfort-Grip)

The nib's tip can be clipped and polished to produce a narrow, very flexible, broad-edged nib (See page 35 of Bound & Lettered 12.3 for instructions).

See Tabellae Ansata issue 2.4 for an article that discuss the characteristics in detail of the various pointed nibs.

N120. Leonardt Principal EF Nib
N120.EF Principal Nib

You can now purchase a modern nib that is equal to the best of the vintage nibs. Brian Walker, a respected pointed pen enthusiast, has worked with a pen manufacturer to duplicate the quality and performance of the legendary Gillott No 1 Principality. The new nib has received rave reviews for both Copperplate and Spencerian. It's flexible and responsive and gives fine hairlines, but is smooth-writing and catches the paper less.

N113. Nikko G Nib
N113. Nikko G Nib.

These nibs from Japan are hand cut, extremely smooth, and long-lasting. They are chrome plated and have a medium flex. Great for Spencerian. Smooth writing with no burrs or scratchiness. Highly recommended by Michael Sull.

Your Price

N118. Zebra G Nib
Zebra Nib.

Similar to the popular Nikko G Nib, but a little more flexible and sharper. It will produce a finer hairline than the Nikko. Same sturdy quality. If you are using the Nikko G but would like to be able to write with thinner hairlines and thicker strokes, give these nibs a try. Michael Sull still recommends the Nikko G nib as best for learning Spencerian, but this Zebra G Nib is a good one, too, for Spencerian.

Which holders will work with this nib?

Just wanted to let you know about my experience with the ZEBRA G nibs: Santa was very generous to me this year and I got a dozen. I pulled the nibs out to play with this weekend and I have found my new love. I used the nib with Walnut Ink and the hairlines, so thin, so smooth, with a light touch and the nib skated effortlessly across the page. I really enjoyed working with this nib. If you haven't had the chance to try this nib out yet, it's worth the couple of bucks. I haven't tried any of my other inks, but I will be doing that this week. So far, I'm loving these nibs. Don't know if they are workhorses yet - I only had them a few days. - Ilovepenmanship

I love them too. The nibs are great with the iron gall inks because the ink does not eat the nib as fast. Great hairlines and just enough flex for shades. Much thanks to John Neal for these!!! - Nan DeLuca

I70. Moon Palace Sumi Ink
Moon Palace Sumi
The Ink is now in a bottle with a Gold Label

While the packaging is a bit different, this is the highly sought after and highly recommended Japanese Sumi Ink. For both broad edge and pointed pen work. Dries waterproof. A great calligraphy ink.

"I like Moon Palace better, but both Moon Palace and Best Bottle are beautiful inks. The Moon Palace has a slight sheen to it, which I like. Michael suggested this ink to me so please tell him I said, "thank you". I just finished a job of 200 invitations with Moon Palace and the ink is beautiful. I did not dilute the ink.
A client just brought me invitations (slick paper) to address. This bride knew going into this that I probably couldn't do pointed pen. However, for fun, I tried the Sumi inks and to my surprise they worked pretty darn good. I usually have to use a sharpie on slick envelopes, yikes!!!"

I08. Higgins Eternal Ink
I08. Higgins Eternal Ink.

A non-waterproof, carbon black ink for dip pens. Our most popular ink for classes. Recommended for copperplate (add a few drops of gum arabic). Perhaps the best ink for calligraphy for a beginner; it will cause the beginner the fewest problems. This ink will bleed more readily than other inks. If bleeding is a problem, try Sumi Inks. 2.5 oz.

Quantity discounts start at 6 & 12.

"For broad-pen writing, I add gouache to Higgins Eternal. Gouache gives Eternal some needed body. It doesn't necessarily have to be black gouache. Indigo or a dark red add an interesting hue to the result. In a quarter ounce of Eternal, I add about a 3/8-inch bead of gouache from a tube. Eternal doesn't give me the hairlines I want in pointed pen work, so for that I much prefer iron gall or walnut ink". - Bob Hurford

I108. Dr. Martin's Pen White
Dr. Martin's Pen-White

A great white ink for pointed pen work! 1oz dropper bottle. Can be thinned with water if necessary.

"The new ink is Dr Martin's Pen White, which sold out at Odyssey. I loved it so much that I went back to the supply store and bought a second bottle. Pat Blair tried it, and it worked beautifully out of the bottle with her Spencerian script. No mixing required. The dropper made dispensing easy. It did get a bit thicker as I was using it, and I added a bit of water to the dropper. All my pieces (white on dark paper) at Odyssey and at IAMPETH were done using that ink. -- Aline Chan

S853. Jumbo Dinky Dip
S853. Jumbo Dinky Dip.

Similar to our Screw-Top Small Dinky Dip (S934), but with larger screw-top jars (1/2 oz) and a larger unfinished wooden base.

Choose your base shape:
1-Square (1 jar) 2.75"x2.75"
4-Square (4 jars): 3.5"x3.5"
4-Rectangle (4 jars): 1.5"x6.5"

The bases are made so that the jars fit tightly in their holes, but also made so you can remove the jars. To remove a jar, you might need to wiggle the jar back and forth while pulling. It can take some effort. Of course, you will want to make sure the lid is screwed on well before starting to remove the jar. When replacing a jar -- if you want it to be removable again -- push it into the hole just enough for it to be secure, but not as deep as it will go.

Jar inside dimensions: approximately 28mm dia. x 25mm high
