A tutorial and exploration guided by Mi Mo (Michelle Morin)
Next session on three Saturdays: Sept. 12, Sept. 19, Sept. 26, from 10am to 12pm Pacific time, via Zoom (offered through Pacific Scribes)
Contact Michelle.L.Morin@gmail.com for information about future sessions.
In this three-session online course, we will learn to use pointed pen and/or brush-tip markers to create a basic “modern calligraphy” hand loosely based on Copperplate script -- but that’s just the foundation. The real fun will begin when we let our creativity loose to customize that hand with experiments in letterform, underlying calligraphic script, and tools.
My hope for this class is that YOU will create your own, personal “modern calligraphy,” and it will be based on your available materials, your calligraphic experience and preferences, and your own natural handwriting.
The principal tools will be pointed pen and/or brush-tip marker. I will also demo at least the following: watercolor pencils, pointed water brush, and so-called modern “flex” fountain pens. (You do not have to buy all these additional tools - work with what you have!)
We will close with individualized final projects of your choosing.
Marker paper or similar smooth paper, about 9” x 12” or 8.5” x 11”. (P32) (P09) (P80)
A brush marker or two - the kind with a fiber/felt, flexible, pointed tip. (M120) (M126) (M97)
A nib holder - ideally one that can be used as either a straight or an “oblique” holder. (H133) (H134) (H129)
- LEFTIES: I suggest lefties working entirely with a straight holder. (H62) (H113)
A pointed, flexible nib: Hunt 101 nib, Zebra G, Nikko G, and the Brause Steno (N77) (N113) (N118) (N90)
Liquid ink container you can dip your nib into (S853) (S934) (S620)
Walnut ink (brown). Comes in crystals to which you add water, or as a liquid ink. (I53) (S449)
Sumi ink (I70)
Specialty calligraphy inks, like Ziller’s acrylic calligraphy inks (I28, SA-I28), or Fox & Quills calligraphy inks (I160, SA-I160)
Specialty calligraphy watercolors, often metallic. (S1000) (S741) (S1051)
Paper towel or rag and a jar for water (S817) (S1005)
