Copperplate is an elegant script style of lettering characterized by thick, shaded down strokes and hairline upstrokes. In this workshop, we will study the unique, pressure-sensitive motion of the pointed flexible nib, and the control needed to form the basic lower case and capital letterforms. The class will begin with a thorough description of the tools needed, moving on to how to hold a pen and work with the flow of the ink. We will then study the basic forms of the letters, learning how to achieve consistency and form. This workshop is suitable for beginners, since we will be starting with the very basics. A knowledge of any pointed pen hand will be helpful, but not necessary.
