Design Studio: Designing with Gouache
Pat Blair

The class will be two 2-hour sessions on Thursday, May 19 and Friday, May 20, 2022.
You must load Zoom on your computer; please email me if you need help setting this up.

Gouache can provide limitless possibilities when working in color. This class will show how to mix and use it with pen or brush, and give you ideas for using it in multiple ways to add a punch of color to your work. We will do several projects to explore the potential for blending color.

You will learn:

  1. How to mix gouache to achieve the EXACT color you are seeking to match, by using the basics of color theory.
  2. A tutorial on envelope addressing, how to center, how to place, and use gouache to match an invitation or card.
  3. Write a piece of text with a variety of colors, blending them to achieve a unified composition.
  4. Writing a piece of text on curved lines, melding colors as you progress through the writing.
  5. Making and using tints on dark paper.

I will be using a pointed pen for the demos, but the projects can be easily done with a broad pen as well. Guide lines will be provided for both types of lettering.

For more information and to register:

  • A good layout bond paper will be fine for practice, such as Canson Pro-Marker Layout Bond. It handles water media well. Or any paper you are used to for working in ink. (P32)
  • A sheet of Arches Hot Press or Stonehenge will be helpful as we explore the paint (PS42) (PS110). One large sheet can be cut into fourths. A light weight will be fine, and this will also be good for more finished work. Another alternative is a pad of Canson Mixed Media, or something similar.
  • A sheet of dark paper for working with tints. (PS95)
  • Several tubes of good quality Gouache (not student grade); Winsor and Newton is recommended. We will be combining various colors, so be sure to find colors you like to work with, and work together well. Include a tube of zinc white in your selection. (WNG1) (WNG2) (WNG3) (WNG4)
  • Your favorite pointed pen nib and holder, I will be demonstrating using copperplate. Or your favorite broad edged nib, if that is your preference. Click here for JNB selection of holders & nibs.
  • Gum arabic, either liquid or powder (I85) (I84)
  • Several containers for mixing and storing gouache (S260) (S679) (S747)
  • Several small water containers (S1005)
  • Several old brushes for mixing and loading the nibs.
  • Pencil (PL38) (PL11)
  • Eraser (E13)
