N70. Brause 66EF Nib
EF66 Brause pointed-pen nib

A very popular and versatile nib for Copperplate and Modern Calligraphy. It is very flexible and can provide great contrast between thin and thick strokes. Moderate pressure will produce swells, and by pressing harder, bold strokes are possible. With its fine hairlines, the nib works for very small writing, to a 1/8-inch x-height. This nib is of consistent manufacture (defective nibs are rare). It tends to catch less on upstrokes than other extra-fine pointed nibs, making it more suitable for papers with some texture. This nib is well-suited for intermediate and advanced calligraphers, but it is not recommended for beginners. Because of its shape, it is also called Arrow Nib.

Linda Schneider's favorite pointed nib is the Brause 66EF. It is the one she uses most often; she says it is "tiny, but mighty." She notes how it writes longer on one dip than most larger nibs (it may be small, but it holds a lot of ink) and that its flexibility allows for especially nice thicks. With the Brause 66EF she can get the "tiniest of hairlines and beautiful swells."

The nib's shaft has a tight curvature and needs a specially adjusted oblique holder. These oblique penholders are available adjusted specifically for the Brause 66EF:
H115. Adjusted Turned Wood Oblique Holder
H96. Black Oblique Plastic Holder (Comfort-Grip)
H130. Blue Oblique Plastic Holder (Comfort-Grip)

The nib's tip can be clipped and polished to produce a narrow, very flexible, broad-edged nib (See page 35 of Bound & Lettered 12.3 for instructions).

See Tabellae Ansata issue 2.4 for an article that discuss the characteristics in detail of the various pointed nibs.

I70. Moon Palace Sumi Ink
Moon Palace Sumi
The Ink is now in a bottle with a Gold Label

While the packaging is a bit different, this is the highly sought after and highly recommended Japanese Sumi Ink. For both broad edge and pointed pen work. Dries waterproof. A great calligraphy ink.

"I like Moon Palace better, but both Moon Palace and Best Bottle are beautiful inks. The Moon Palace has a slight sheen to it, which I like. Michael suggested this ink to me so please tell him I said, "thank you". I just finished a job of 200 invitations with Moon Palace and the ink is beautiful. I did not dilute the ink.
A client just brought me invitations (slick paper) to address. This bride knew going into this that I probably couldn't do pointed pen. However, for fun, I tried the Sumi inks and to my surprise they worked pretty darn good. I usually have to use a sharpie on slick envelopes, yikes!!!"

--Clair F., Jan 2011.

Four sizes available:

2.0 oz (widemouthed jar)
6.0 oz (180ml)

15 & 60 oz are temporarily unavailable: arriving Dec 2019

P21. JNB Graph Pad 11x17, 50 Sheets
JNB Graph Pad
Light blue grid (8 squares/inch). 24 lb bond. 11"x17". Approx. 50 sheets.

A non-bleeding paper that is great for calligraphy. (We use the same paper in our JNB Practice Pads.) Many instructors have their students use this pad in their classes.

(For graph with slant lines P01.)

Please choose color: Light or Dark.

Light: This grid does not show on many copiers, shows faintly on others, and usually disappears when you adjust the exposure one setting lighter. If you use a copier to produce your finished art for reproduction, this is the pad for you. This pad is good for jobs done at quick printers.

Dark: For classes, some students may appreciate a slightly darker grid. This is particularly true for adult classes. This is still a light blue grid. Some teachers have commented that their students found the original pad's grid was too light.

BR26. W&N Sceptre Gold 101 Brush
W&N Sceptre Gold 101 Brush, Round, Short Handle

For fine detail, lines & washes. A traditional and popular head shape for all-purpose watercolor work. Can be used for broad strokes yet it will also form a sharp point. They possess excellent color holding capacity, sensitivity, spring and durability. Recommended by Michael Sull.

High quality brushes made from a mix of sable and synthetic fibres. They are ideal for watercolor and suitable for use with acrylic. For watercolor media, while today's synthetic brushes perform excellently, pure sable still has the edge. With a blend you can get performance that is close to sable at a price that is close to synthetic. The blend of hair in Sceptre Gold II also gives you added benefits. Sable hair has excellent spring while the high-quality synthetic filaments ensure that the brushes are soft enough to work the color but also have a strong snap so they return back to their original shape with ease. The high proportion of sable in Sceptre Gold II gives the brushes considerably more ability to make larger washes in one stroke than normal synthetic brushes, and the hairs are tapered to a fine point, giving the brush control for detailed work.
