S738. Shell Gold Tablet
Powdered gold with a gum arabic binder. Comes in a transparent plastic container with a lid. Close lid after use.
Use with a brush or pen to add real gold decoration to manuscripts, scrolls and calligraphic works. Shell gold can complement areas of gold leaf or it can be used alone.

We have discontinued the larger sizes because they did not offer any cost savings. Our small shell gold is approximately 7.5mm diameter x 4mm thick. However, size & weight varies slightly depending on the amount of residual water.

Shell gold prices are based on the worldwide gold market and may be different from what is printed in our catalog.

I70. Moon Palace Sumi Ink
Moon Palace Sumi
The Ink is now in a bottle with a Gold Label

While the packaging is a bit different , this is the highly sought after and highly recommended Japanese Sumi Ink. For both broad edge and pointed pen work. Dries waterproof. A great calligraphy ink.

"I like Moon Palace better, but both Moon Palace and Best Bottle are beautiful inks. The Moon Palace has a slight sheen to it, which I like. Michael suggested this ink to me so please tell him I said "thank you". I just finished a job of 200 invitations with Moon Palace and the ink is beautiful. I did not dilute the ink.
A client just brought me invitations (slick paper) to address. This bride knew going in to this that I probably couldn't do pointed pen. However, for fun, I tried the Sumi inks and to my surprise they worked pretty darn good. I usually have to use a sharpie on slick envelopes, yikes!!!"

--Clair F., Jan 2011.

2.0 oz $5.95 (widemouth jar)
6.0 oz (180ml) $12.95

You save $54.95 (10 six ounce bottles cost $129.50).
Great for teachers, or buy and share the cost with a friend or two or three.

S928. Water Gold Size / Roberson
S928. Roberson Water Gold Size.

A traditional size for illumination. Made with natural gums. Paint over the area to be gilded with a brush. Allow to dry, which may take 10 to 20 minutes. While it is still tacky, apply the gold. If the gold size dries out too much, its stickiness can be reactivated by breathing directly over the applied size. Yellow color. Recommended by Georgia Angelopoulos, and a big hit with her class at Legacies.

S455. Gilders Bole Powder
Gilders Bole.

Choose Size: 1/2oz or 1oz

1. Use this powdered color on the back of your sheet to transfer designs instead of graphite.
2. Add some of this powdered color to you mixture when you are making gesso for raised gilding. It tints the gesso and makes any pin holes in the gold much less obvious than with a bright white gesso.

This is the "Armenian Bole" that is listed as an ingredient in the gesso recipes. However, this bole is from France, not Armenia.

"The actual outline drawing was very carefully planned, and drawn, down to the last tiny detail, the final being on tracing paper. I traced this down very carefully on to the prepared vellum using Saral transfer paper. Nowadays I would rub powdered Armenian bole on the back of the tracing instead, as it is non greasy and easier to erase after ink lines have been drawn." Sheila Waters discussing the process she used in her Roundel of the Seasons

Basic Recipe
Mix 4 parts of pigment with one part gum Arabic (liquid or powder) in a container, add distilled water slowly as you stir until you get the consistency of ink you like.
Exact measurement Recipe
1 teaspoon Pearl Ex pigment
¼ teaspoon gum Arabic (liquid or powder)
1 teaspoon distilled water
Thinner consistency Pearl Ex ink will lie flatter on the paper when dry; a thicker consistency ink (try ½ teaspoon of water) will stand up a bit on the paper when dry, creating a raised effect. Recipe courtesy of Joi Hunt of Bien Fait Calligraphy.
