In this 2.5-hour workshop, you will explore some new areas of Sumi art as you continue on your journey through the joyous world of contemporary Sumi mark-making. You will learn to grind sumi ink, load the brushes with variegated tones of ink, cover po’-mo and sumi sink art to create textural broadsides...and more! No art experience required.


  • A basic pointed Sumi brush (several sizes, if you have them)
  • Pointed pen (e.g., Speedball Oblique Pen Set) and other favorite writing tools [N113, H112]
  • Foam brush, 2” or 3” wide
  • Sumi ink (e.g., Yasutomo or Moon Palace) [I70 or I24-2]

* This is commercial bottle ink, but best If you have an ink stick and grinding stone (suzuri)

  • Small pieces of mat board, 3” long and 1⁄2”, 1” and 2” wide
  • 2 or 3 small saucers for holding sumi (like small dipping sauce dish) [S934]
  • Various papers—some smooth, some textured like watercolor paper, rice paper [PA03, PA101]
  • Water container [S1005]
  • Plastic mat for work surface
  • Paper towels [S817]
