Illuminating the Dark with Sharon Zeugin

Calligraphers typically reach for familiar texts when learning a new script. We don’t consider our own
words worthy of beautiful writing, and thus miss opportunities to connect more personally with calligraphy. Through simple Haiku poems this class provides an opportunity to connect the words we write with a script we develop—our personal expressions amplified and illuminated through the drama of color and gold on black paper. In addition, students will have the opportunity to create a single section, pamphlet-style book of their ‘illustrated” haikus.

In this course we will be:
• Exploring ways to develop a personal script using both handwriting and an informal, monoline Italic
• Combining your own words with a script of your own
• Expanding composition and design skills
• Learning simple techniques for mixing gouache, using pastel to add color and design elements with your text
• Creating a small pamphlet book or “broadside” page of your own haiku.
While we will have a project (haiku book or broadside) goal in mind, we’ll celebrate practice pages as much as a finished product.
