S197. VELLUM: Calf Skin Manuscript - First Quality Calf Skin Manuscript Vellum - First Quality
Medium weight. Our vellum sheets are expertly prepared on one side for writing. These sheets are ready for you to put pen or quill and ink or gouache to vellum! The color of these first quality sheets is a creamy white.
For second quality vellum manuscripts, see item S1075.
Used on vellum and paper just before writing to achieve fine hairlines. Will help produce crisper letters. May stop bleeding, feathering.
Choose 1/2oz, 1oz, or Bag.
1/2oz and 1oz: Tie up in a small square of cotton cloth, and lightly pounce onto your paper to produce finer thins.
Bag: A small drawstring (cloth) bag of ground gum sandarac ready for you to use to correct slight bleeding or to get thinner thins. Dab the sandarac onto the paper through the cloth & then hold the paper vertically and tap off any excess. Contains 1 ounce gum sandarac.
Manuscript vellum has a white or nearly white surface, but some skins produce vellum with irregular coloration: an off-white cast to the entire sheet, areas of differing shades of light brown, or both. We call these Vellum Seconds because they are not white. Other than that, the surface quality is the same as our Manuscript Vellum, and it is prepared for writing on one side. For certain artworks the coloration can add to the interest of the piece or give it an aged look. And it is less expensive.
