BR26. W&N Sceptre Gold 101 Brush
W&N Sceptre Gold 101 Brush, Round, Short Handle

For fine detail, lines & washes. A traditional and popular head shape for all-purpose watercolor work. Can be used for broad strokes yet it will also form a sharp point. They possess excellent color holding capacity, sensitivity, spring and durability. Recommended by Michael Sull.

High quality brushes made from a mix of sable and synthetic fibres. They are ideal for watercolor and suitable for use with acrylic. For watercolor media, while today's synthetic brushes perform excellently, pure sable still has the edge. With a blend you can get performance that is close to sable at a price that is close to synthetic. The blend of hair in Sceptre Gold II also gives you added benefits. Sable hair has excellent spring while the high-quality synthetic filaments ensure that the brushes are soft enough to work the color but also have a strong snap so they return back to their original shape with ease. The high proportion of sable in Sceptre Gold II gives the brushes considerably more ability to make larger washes in one stroke than normal synthetic brushes, and the hairs are tapered to a fine point, giving the brush control for detailed work.

Excellent for fine detail, lines and washes. The round-bellied watercolor brush is the most popular watercolor brush. Quality Kolinsky sable hair, birchwood handles and seamless nickel ferrules all put together by hand to create a truly excellent brush. Has been improved to ensure a perfect point. Matte finish handle.

Recommended by Valerie Weilmuenster for illuminated letters as a good and ess expensive alternative to the Winsor & Newton Series 7.

BR12. Rekab Brush
Rekab Brushes Series 311

John Stevens uses these round ferrule, chisel-edged Rekab brushes for smaller Roman lettering as well as for a variety of other styles. John uses these along with flat ferrule chisel-edged brushes for his brush lettering. These quality sable brushes, imported from Israel, with proper care will last for 20 years or more. These are called "Showcard" or "One Stroke Brushes." They are more versatile than flat ferrule, chisel edge brushes, but they take a bit more skill to use. John recommends the #5 to start with. For a wider range of sizes, he suggests adding the #3 & #7.

#3 -- 1/8"
#4 -- 3/16"
#5 -- 1/4"
#6 -- 5/16"
#7 -- 3/8"

BR46. Raphael Kolinsky 8404 Brushes
Raphael Kolinsky Sable Fine Point Round Watercolor Brush

These brushes are handmade with the finest Kolinsky Red Sable. Multiple hair lengths ensure tightest possible point and a full belly for a high paint load. They have superior resiliency, spring and snap. (The photo shows the shape, but not the size of the brushes)

Recommended by Rosemary Buczek for illumination.

BR30. Cotman Round WC Brush
Cotman Round Watercolor Brush.

Synthetic brush that is slightly stiffer than sable. Recommended by Lisa Engelbrecht; she especially likes the #8. The secret of the Cotman Bushes, from Winsor & Newton, lies in the fibers. By blending fibers of differing thickness, we achieve the three most important qualities sought by the artist. The thicker fibers contribute strength and spring, while the thinner fibers improve color carrying capacity (which have recently been improved by 50%). The two fibers together retain their point, time after time.

M97. Pentel Fude Sign Pen Brush Tip Marker
This pen’s brush-like tip is great for quick, fun writing. Linda Schneider uses it for pointed pen scripts such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Grace Song calls it the Pentel Fude Touch Sign Pen and calls it "a great beginner brush pen." Water-based ink.

M97. Pentel Sign Pen Brush Tip color chart.

Linda's comments:
"...resembles the same calligraphic line as a nib with the pointed pen. The Pentel pen is easy to carry in a purse or pocket, unlike so many other brush markers on the market. Wonderful to practice lettering outside your studio without having to carry your pen, ink, water etc. I am encouraging calligraphers to write anywhere, anytime, anyplace, like at restaurants (a thank-you with the waiter's name on it), anywhere on the go, on location, even on an airplane."

Linda's comments on the new colors:

"I love, love, LOVE the new colors of the Pentel Sign Pen brush marker!!!! I recommend them to anyone interested in pointed pen, whether a beginner or professional, to carry one on them at all times while out of the studio, either to practice or to write notes of thanks."

Linda Schneider, author of Designing Faces, Figures, Florals and More: Contemporary Ornate Pictorial Calligraphy (B3209). These markers will be featured in her forthcoming book Script Lettering and Design: Anywhere, Anytime, and on Anything (B3959).
