"After the death of the famed A. D. Taylor in 1898, [Clinton C.] Canan was equaled by no living penman in delicate, accurate, free-hand ornamental penmanship. A Zanerian graduate, he taught penmanship at Cleary College in Michigan, the Cedar Rapids Business School in Iowa, and Shissler College in Pennsylvania. Born in 1873, he died at 31 in 1904."
