B2769. Foundations of Calligraphy by Sheila Waters. (2006) 2018. 134pp. 9"x11.25". Concealed spiral binding
Sheila Waters was a master scribe and a master teacher. For over thirty years of her summer workshops, Sheila took scribes through their paces for a week or more of in-depth instruction in letterforms (historical and modern). Students came from as far away as Australia and Japan for these intensive classes. And for many years, she taught numerous weekend workshops sponsored by calligraphy guilds throughout the USA and Canada and was a frequent instructor at the international conference held each summer. In Foundations, Sheila provides insightful analysis of forms and construction, taking the mystery out of learning calligraphy. You learn how to analyze a script, which helps you toward mastery of an alphabet. In the 110 pages of exemplar alphabets, instruction, and hints, Sheila shares with you the knowledge she has gathered over her years of study and practice. The presentation is honed by her long experience teaching calligraphers how to advance their skill and art. This 4th printing, much revised from the 2006 printing, now has a 16-page color gallery of Sheila's work.

Excellent for Learning and Broadedge
After playing around with different scripts I found my interest is in only dip pen broad edge calligraphy and I wish I had found this book earlier. This book contains wonderful lessons and examples that I have not seen explained and examples given elsewhere. For example, letter spacing considerations are gone through reasonably in depts with great examples. It also has great examples and explanations of piece layouts and all things related to spacing and alignment. If you are interested in broadedge calligraphy this is basically the bible for that.

Foundational calligraphy
This is a handsome sized spiral bound book, a good size to see the amply illustrated scripts, instructions, ductus and more. There are lovely reproductions of the calligrapher's works-nice colour. I think I will spend hours and days and weeks learning what the calligrapher has so generously offered the student. From page layout to letter spacing these foundational hands offer a very good introduction to Western calligraphy.

Excellent book
Beautiful book with a lot of detailed information, including illustrations of common errors and what to do to correct them.

Excellent Reference Work on Calligraphy
I am very, very pleased with this book. The diagrams make things abundantly clear. She provides exactly the right balance of written instruction, written background, close studies of letters (like ductus), and finished exemplar works. I find her writing style very pleasing - down-to-earth but not condescending or simplistic, thorough but not tedious or overly technical.I should note that I'm a beginner. While my knowledge of calligraphy is certainly limited at present, I have been browsing a lot of books and other resources as I get my start, so when I say this book is excellent, I'm basing that on having read a little bit of quite a few different calligraphers recently.

I treasure my copy.

Beautifully bound with one suggestion
Beautifully bound book, they really thought ahead with this one with the convenience of opening the pages fully for reference and practice. My only suggestion would be to increase the width of the spiral so the pages can turn more easily. Otherwise, thank you!!

A Wonderful Instruction Book
What a wonderful instruction book it is. Now, with it, I don't have to pull out those Instructional articles in various back issues of Letter Arts Review that Sheila did so long ago. Also, I still have my class notes and instructions from our workshop with her teaching italic to our guild, and pictures of her sitting with me for some personal instruction time. Blessed are we to have had Sheila and her teaching in our life.
