Q: What material is the palette *cover* made from?
Does it just sit atop the palette or is it secure?

  A: The cover is the same heavy porcelain of the base. The central portion of the base with the wells is raised. The cover has a lip around the edges that fit around the raised area and keeps the lid from sliding off. That combined with the weight holds the lid in place. There is no securing mechanism other than that.
