A: The Hunt 101 and new pointed nibs come with a protective coating to prevent rust. The coating needs to be removed so that the ink will spread evenly over the nib, allowing the nib to hold more ink, and allowing the ink to flow smoothly off the nib. There are various methods to remove this coating, which are described here: https://www.johnnealbooks.com/prod_detail_list/pointed-nibs

A: Hunt 101 is a sharp pointed pen nib. You will find that the super smooth papers such as Rhodia or Clairfontaine work very well. The nib will tend to catch (and perhaps splatter) on upstrokes, especially for beginners. A wide range of inks, including Walnut, Moon Palace Sumi, Iron Gall, Higgins Eternal, all work well with this nib.
