Ben Shahn Lettering
With Carol DuBosch
Live (also recorded for later viewing)
February 25, 2023
10:00 AM – 12:00 PM (PT)
Beginners Welcome
Ben Shahn is best known for his powerful posters and works of social realism from the 1960’s. His lettering is quirky and lively, and very much the product of a hand. The script is easily learned and can be adapted and customized as needed for various applications. The informal, fresh look of the script is perfect for cards, envelopes, manuscript books and broadsides. This one-day class will focus on learning the Ben Shahn letters. We will also explore color-blending and several creative layout exercises.

Supply List:
A folded pen. I like the Luthis Libelula Folded Pen (N155), available at John Neal Books. I also like the Horizon Brass Folded Pen (nib only) available at Paper & Ink Arts.
It is also possible to write Ben Shahn Letters with a broad edged pen, such as the Pilot Parallel Pen. (FP67) Whatever broad edged pen you have will be fine.
Practice paper – my favorite is Gilbert 25% cotton. (P69, P25)
Ink that behaves well with the paper you are using. A free-flowing, non-waterproof ink such as Higgins Eternal (I08) or Walnut ink (I145, S450) are excellent.
