MATERIAL LIST

You will need to bring in advance a couple of your favorite experimental alphabets you could have developed

in some other workshop or any calligraphy with a personal twist. Remember we will develop

the concepts of texture/text/textile.

You will need to bring some fabrics of your choice or various color photocopies of textiles. Could be

the whole design or a detail. You could also photocopy different types like weavings, knittings, crochet,

felted, quilts, braided, bonded, knotted or embroidery, manufactured from interlacing warp and weft.

Consider looking for simple designs with not many colors, we will reduce them into no more than 6

Colors.

TOOLS:

-Some of your favorite tools: ruling pen, cola pen, folded, automatic. Cooperplate Nibs, Speedball B nibs and special effect nibs like the Mitchell/ Rexel scroll nibs or the music nib. Paralell pens. (N22), (N115), (N27), (N16), (N11), (N154), (FP67)

Several round brushes for painting and writing. Numbers between 2 & 6. Pentel brush. (BR38), (FP57)

Dropper or pippetes. (S141)

Artliners aplicator (used by Yukimi) or syringe with needle.(S1035)

Watercolor or gouache in tubes or pans in the colors of your textiles, no more than 6 colors plus white and walnut ink. (S609), (Click HERE for our Gouache)

Two buckets for water, for pale & dark colors. (S1005)

Palet to prepare colors and a pipettes to collect them. (S120-30)

Five containers with lids to store prepared colors. (S787)

Any type of device to prevent rolling tools and brushes all over the place.

Pencil, eraser. (PL38), (E13)

Paper tape, UHU glue stick, double stick tape (S391)

Masking fluid (S198)

color pencils if watersoluble, better. (S776)

A portable light table would be very useful, if you don’t have one you could bring a portable easel with a light underneath to be able to trace in a comfortable way. (S1013)

PAPER:

Some sheets of your favorite layout paper (P09-100)

20 sheets of paper A4, letter or aproximate size depending on the best use of your paper. You could either purchase a block or have your pages cut in advance from an Arches Text        Wove sheet. From a sheet of 22” x 30” you get 8 pages of 8” x 11”. If not consider a paper for watercolor with a smooth surface and light weight. Light paper is anything less than       140 lb/300 gsm (PA03), (PA42)

A couple of sheets of tracing paper (P43)

- Paper towels or rags (S817)

MISCELLANEAOUS OR MATERIALS WE

COULD OR NOT USE:

Fine liners like Micron, Edding, drawliner or any of the kind. (M17)

Embroiding thread & needles. (S219), (S825)

- Fusible bond, heat & bond.

Extra nibs to stick, sew or glue to your work.

Finally by the end of the workshop I would ask you to photocopy in color in a good quality paper, -maybe the Text Wove paper- a couple of your works to weave them together.

You will need then:

A soft (A4/letter or aproximate size) cardboard, 2 or 3mm thick, glue stick, straight edge metallic ruler & sharp cutter.

N22. Ruling Pen
N22. Ruling Pen.

Julian Waters, Gottfried Pott, and many others are using ruling pens to produce expressive letters. This calligraphy ruling pen is designed specifically for lettering. You vary the line width by tilting the pen. Wood handle with brass collar & writing unit.

Your Price

N155. Luthis Pens
N155. Luthis Pens.

Folded metal pens for expressive writing and formal calligraphy. The tips are aluminum; the handles are unfinished wood. Approximately 6" long. Four styles are offered; each writes differently. The pens are from Argentina; they are labeled with their Spanish names.

"They give great edges and hairlines and flow beautifully. For as thin an edge as it has, it's amazingly stable. And the thin handle makes manipulation easy. I can recommend them highly." - Carrie Imai

Butterfly (Mariposa). Has two writing edges.
Moth (Polillita). A smaller version of Butterfly (Mariposa).
Fan (Abanico). The writing edge curve is similar to a standard folded pen or calligraphy ruling pen.
Dragonfly (Libélula). The writing edge has a unique curve that allows you to change writing styles quickly. Carol DuBosch’s favorite of the four.

Purchase all four and save: use code N155-S4.

WNGDP-S. W&N Gouache: Double Primary Set
Winsor & Newton Gouache: Double Primary Set

Colors (all Series 1):
Alizarin Crimson
Flame Red
Lemon Yellow
Phthalo Blue
Spectrum Yellow
Ultramarine (Blue)
Zinc White

Sheila Waters teaches color mixing using a double primary set: a warm and cool of each of red, blue and yellow. With the six primaries you can mix brighter colors. (a) The cool yellow tends toward green. The cool blue tends toward green. These two are used for mixing all the colors between yellow and blue. This includes all of the greens, greenish yellows such as chartreuse, and greenish blues such as teal. (b) The warm red tends toward orange. The warm yellow tends toward orange. These two are used for mixing all the colors between yellow and red (oranges and all orange-reds and orange-yellows). (c) The warm blue tends toward purple and is mixed with the warm red for the purplish colors. Winsor & Newton is our most popular gouache and is highly recommended. It is excellent for calligraphy.

For a lightfast Double Primary Set, purchase WNGPDP-S. It contains a similar palette of warm and cool colors, but the pigments are more permanent when exposed to light. The colors are not exactly the same, but they mix in a similar fashion.
