B4324. Codici 2 /Ingmire
B4324. Codici 2: Calligraphic Visual Communication Research by Thomas Ingmire. 2019. 72pp. 8.5"x11". Paper

Available in 2020. You can reserve your copy now. Your credit card will not be charged until shortly before the book ships. If you wish to use PayPal and delay your payment, you must email your order directly to info@johnnealbooks.com rather than ordering on the John Neal Books website.

This is the long-awaited continuation of Thomas Ingmire's investigation into letterforms as vehicles for artistic expression. He wants to know how calligraphic letterforms can serve a larger purpose than making a meaningful text attractive. At what point is a letter no longer a letter? What are the essential elements of a letterform, and can those elements be disrupted or subverted to communicate new ideas, rhythms, and forms without literally being read? It is difficult enough to learn and master making letters in the traditional way without then being asked to break down and unlearn them. But this is exactly what Thomas is asking both of himself and of us. The book has four sections: Toward a contemporary calligraphy and away from mere legibility; Thomas Ingmire + 2013 -- observations on the nature of calligraphy and meaning while teaching in Japan; Innocent letters standing alone -- a dialogue between Thomas Ingmire and Tom Greensfelder; and Lettering as drawing -- a workshop.

B4320. Warfare in Medieval Manuscripts /Porter
B4320. Warfare in Medieval Manuscripts by Pamela Porter. 2018. 112pp. 6"x7.5". Hardcover

The glamour associated with knights in shining armor, colorful tournaments, and heroic deeds appeal strongly to the modern imagination. However, few pieces of military dress and equipment have survived, so for a comprehensive view of the nature of medieval warfare we rely on written documentation and the information preserved in paintings, sculptures, carvings, and other pictorial sources. The most numerous of these are the miniatures and drawings found in manuscript books, partly because books tend to survive better that other artefacts and partly because many individual volumes contain multiple representations. Pamela Porter presents a variety of evocative manuscript illuminations and reveals them as a source of information about military dress, equipment, and practices.

B4318. In Search of the Book... / Loney
B4318. In Search of the Book as a Work of Art by Alan Loney. 2019. 114pp. 6"x9". Paper

In Search of the Book as a Work of Art is a probing series of questions about how we understand the words 'art' and 'book' and what happens when we put them together. It argues that the categories by which we have distinguished different kinds of books no longer tell us what we are looking at when we look at new books, including many being made by trade publishers. Categories like 'fine press book' and 'artist book' have served useful purposes in the past, but are now redundant in the face of the incredible range of categorical overlaps in books that people are actually making. Along the way, this book explores and explodes a number of current ideas about books whose use-by dates are seen by the author as well and truly passed. The author proposes that ordinary language is the clue to how the old, traditional and historical categories are no longer adequate or relevant.

B4317. Marbled Paper /Wolfe
B4317. Marbled Paper: Its History, Techniques, and Patterns by Richard J. Wolfe. 2018. 245pp. 37 color plates. 9"x12". Paper
Subtitle: with special reference to the relationship of marbling to bookbinding in Europe and the Western world.

Second edition, from the original edition published in 1990 by the University of Pennsylvania Press (a publication of the A.S.W. Rosenbach Fellowship in Bibliography). With over 350 color and 80 black-and-white illustrations, and a new Foreword by Sidney Berger. Richard J. Wolfe (1928-2017) was a rare book librarian, practicing marbler, and collector of marbled papers and books about marbling. This book is the result of more than 25 years of research and practical experience. Wolfe tracked down and sorted out historical records of marbling from their original sources, drawing on his own extensive experience as a practitioner to write eloquently on technical and stylistic questions. The resulting study puts all aspects of this fascinating craft in proper perspective. When first published, Marbled Paper was immediately recognized as the most comprehensive study of marbling to that point, and its status as the standard history of the subject is undiminished.
