In this practical book, John Stevens shares his brush knowledge and provides exercises developed and refined over many years of teaching brush lettering workshops. This is a progressive program of instruction that leads to classic Trajan Capitals – and beyond. He introduces you to the brush and how it contrasts with the pen. Brush techniques follow, where you learn how to prepare, hold, and load your brush. Brush dynamics are discussed as you make your first strokes. You learn how the brush moves when you change angles and make curves and other turns. You get to know the broad brush better with a first alphabet, Neuland. You learn basic strokes, joins, and special strokes. You explore texture and rhythm. From the angular Neuland, you move on to a rounded Roman Capital form. Then from that alphabet, you move to extensive instruction for the Trajan letterforms, including a full-size exemplar alphabet spanning 27 pages. Final chapters take your letters into words and works, cover other alphabets and variations, and present a gallery full of inspiration.

B4128. Alice: A Survey of the Calligraphy of Alice
B4128. Alice: A Survey of the Calligraphy of Alice by Jerry Kelly. 2017. 8"x11.5". Hardcover

Alice Koeth, known professionally simply as Alice, is one of the most respected calligraphers in the world today, though relatively few of her works have been published in book form. The vast majority of her graphic output remains unseen and uncollected. This book, compiled, with Alice’s active participation, has over 140 illustrations, showing the depth and breadth of her artistry. Jerry's introduction and Donald Jackson's eloquent appreciation set her work in context. Most works are illustrated in color, many are presented full-page.
Over a career spanning more than 60 years, Alice’s artistry exemplifies taste, technique, wit, and her own unique graphic style. A keen understanding of craft, respect for tools, and interest in historical forms have contributed to her command of various calligraphic styles, written with extraordinary skill. Best known are her masterful posters for The Morgan Library from the 60s & 70s, which have been graciously photographed by the Morgan for this book. More of her graphic work was created for a wide assortment of clients—commercial enterprises, publishers, universities, organizations, and individuals.
