In this workshop we will explore lettering with masking techniques and create watercolor backgrounds. Demonstrations will include various watercolor washes and decorative techniques, lettering with masking fluid, lifting letters and shapes from watercolor backgrounds, using masking tape to make negative space to letter in, and adding positive letters to create emphasis and interest.

Supplies

• Masking Fluid – (preferably new) Pebeo Drawing Gum (S198)
• Watercolors – Winsor & Newton (WNWC1) (WNWC2)
• Schminke Calligraphy Gouache (Optional) (SG27)
• Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache (Optional) (WNG1)
• Winsor & Newton Cotman Round WC Brushes (sizes 1,6, and 10 or 12, or similar) (BR30)
• Old brush in a small size for touching up masking fluid (optional)
• Watercolor Palette (S679 or S747, or similar)
• 6 to 8 pieces of watercolor paper – can be Cold Press or Hot Press or a mixture
  Arches 90# HP (PA42)
  Canson XL Watercolor Pad (P113)
• One or two 12" x 16" (or similar size) Masonite or wooden board, foam core or stiff cardboard to stretch paper on
• Two pencils, ruler, eraser, scissors
• A few colored pencils – Prismacolor Premier Pencils (PL05)
• A few watercolor pencils (optional)
• Rubber Cement Pick-Up (Optional) (S199)
• Regular Masking Tape (can be 1" or wider) or Drafting Tape (S412)
• Low tack Masking Tape (can be ¾" or 1")
• Two water containers, paper towel
• Straight Nib Holder, such as Marbled Penholder (H63), Manuscript Color Holder (H111), Manuscript Wooden Holder (H112), Cork Tip Holder (H105)
• Oblique Nib Holder (Optional), such as Adjusted Turned Wood Oblique Holder (H115)
• Speedball C-series nibs, C-1, C-2, C-3 (N09)
• Speedball B-series nibs, B-0, B-1, B-5 (N16)
• Nikko G nib (Optional) (N113)
• Plastic wrap
• Salt (can be table, Kosher or rock salt, or all three if you have them)
• Vinegar, rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, dish soap
• Eye dropper or pipet (S1039) (S870) (S705)
• Drinking straw
• Sponges, natural (if you have them) and synthetic. We will be cutting up the synthetic ones.
• An old toothbrush
• Letraset or similar transfer lettering (if you have it)
• Old credit card to cut up, or plastic ruler
