Description

This workshop introduces you to the art of ornamental mandala drawing, where precise geometry forms the foundation for elegant decorative detailing. Designed for beginners to intermediate learners, the workshop emphasizes structure, symmetry, and mindful repetition as tools for creating balanced and visually rich mandalas. Through guided exercises and step-by-step demonstrations, participants will move from basic geometric construction to completing a fully detailed ornamental mandala that feels intentional, harmonious, and complete.

Lesson 1 - Foundations & Geometry
Focuses on building a strong conceptual and technical base. Students will explore mandalas from both spiritual and ornamental perspectives, gaining an understanding of symmetry, repetition, and circular structure. The session covers essential tools and materials, workspace setup, and techniques for developing confident, controlled lines. Students will then be guided through constructing clean mandala grids using circles, divisions, and concentric rings. By the end of the day, participants will have a solid geometric framework ready for ornamentation.

Lesson 2 - Ornamental Elements & Composition
Focus shifts to ornamentation and visual balance. Students will learn and practice a range of ornamental motifs such as petals, lotus forms, scrolls, acanthus-inspired leaves, and floral fillers. The session emphasizes how to place these elements harmoniously within circular spaces, while understanding rhythm, spacing, and flow. Students will also learn how to choose an effective centre motif and gradually build complexity outward, resulting in a well-planned composition for the final mandala.

Lesson 3 - Detailing & Final Mandala
Students will learn techniques such as thick–thin line variation, stippling for depth, and finishing details that add elegance and clarity to ornamental work. The session brings together everything learned as students work step-by-step on their final ornamental mandala. Optional guidance on minimal colouring and presentation will also be shared. By the end of the workshop, participants will have one fully finished ornamental mandala and the confidence to create balanced, detailed designs independently.
