Description

S430. Daniel Smith Watercolor Ground, 4 oz.

Watercolor painting doesn’t necessarily require paper. Brush a layer of Daniel Smith Watercolor Ground onto wood, canvas, metal, glass, ceramic, plastic, stone, plaster, and plenty of other surfaces. Once it dries you’ll have a soft, slightly toothy finish that looks and handles much like cold press watercolor paper.

Preparing your surface: Make sure it’s clean and dry. Absorbent/semi-absorbent materials like paper, canvas, fabric, wood, and plaster are ready-to-go as-is. For slick, non-absorbent surfaces like metal, plastic, or glass, rough them up a bit with sandpaper or steel wool so the ground has something to grip to.

Allow the ground to dry for 24 hours before painting on it. Works well with watercolor and thinned acrylics. Since it soaks up water more readily than paper, you may find you need less water in your mixes than usual. For an extra layer of mood, try mixing a little watercolor into the ground before you apply it. For example, try tinting it with your favorite yellow watercolor for a golden glow when painting sunny landscapes.

Available in two colors:

  • Transparent Ground is perfect for when you want what’s underneath to stay visible –– wood grain, printed or decorative paper, or any other interesting surface will show through your painting instead of disappearing under an opaque base. It’s also handy for adding texture to a piece or smoothing over imperfections on a surface. 4 oz jar covers roughly 7 square feet at a 2mm thickness.
  • Titanium White is perfect for creating a clean, bright white base on any surface, no matter what color it started out as. It also doubles as a fix for watercolor mishaps: paint over an area you’re not happy with and you’ve got a fresh spot to rework! For the smoothest repairs, mix the ground with a small amount of water, then feather the edges with a soft brush so the patch blends in. 4 oz jar covers roughly 10 square feet at a 2mm thickness.

Details:

  • Thick, brushable consistency
  • Archival and acid-free, with excellent lightfastness
  • Stands up to heavy scrubbing without damage
  • Suitable for watercolor and mixed media
