The best book for all things calligraphic based on Sheila’s many years of teaching. Plus, lots of gorgeous works for inspiration.

Excellent book. As a beginning calligrapher I appreciate the variety of subjects it covers. The binding also makes it easy to keep open to the page as you’re working with it. I’d highly recommend it.

Covers everything from nib prep to design and layout. Wish it had been my first book on calligraphy, but I did not know it existed at the time. There's a wealth of information here, and lots of examples to study (as well as tips on how to study examples). I will say, the author is against play during practice. As a teacher myself, I get it, because serious practice creates serious results. As someone who's "aha" moments have almost always come when I take a break and "play" a little, however, well... Ms. Waters and I can't agree on everything. But I'd totally jump at the chance to do a workshop under her if I could. She knows a lot and is good at communicating that knowledge. Many people are good at something, and many people can teach. Sadly, not many are both. Waters is a rare gem who is. So why are you still reading this? Get the book and get to work.

This makes my 11th book on calligraphy. I'd gladly trade 8 of those for this one book. If you are interested in learning the foundations of foundational hand calligraphy, you won't be disappointed.

A treasure trove of information. I've learned more from this book than any other, and what it taught me has improved ALL my scripts. Cannot recommend more highly. If you only had one book, this is it.

After playing around with different scripts I found my interest is in only dip pen broad edge calligraphy and I wish I had found this book earlier. This book contains wonderful lessons and examples that I have not seen explained and examples given elsewhere. For example, letter spacing considerations are gone through reasonably in depts with great examples. It also has great examples and explanations of piece layouts and all things related to spacing and alignment. If you are interested in broadedge calligraphy this is basically the bible for that.

This is a handsome sized spiral bound book, a good size to see the amply illustrated scripts, instructions, ductus and more. There are lovely reproductions of the calligrapher's works-nice colour. I think I will spend hours and days and weeks learning what the calligrapher has so generously offered the student. From page layout to letter spacing these foundational hands offer a very good introduction to Western calligraphy.
