Description

B2476. FW Tamblyns's Home Instructor in Penmanship F.W. Tamblyn. 8th ed. 2001. 174pp. 8.5"x5.25". Spiral.

80 pages of instruction on basic script starting with holding the pen and positioning the paper, followed by pages of exercises, letterforms, words, and sentences to copy. Then 33 pages on Artistic Writing (Spencerian) -- instruction on adding the stresses to capitals and appropriate lowercase letters. Smaller sections on Engravers Script, broad-edged alphabets, off-hand flourishing, engrossing, and diplomas. A great reprint. A highly recommended manual. Reprints the 7th edition, 1938, with a new foreword and an added biography of Tamblyn.

It is a very nice reprint. I'm impressed with it's quality I guess I was waiting for a poorly photocopy with cheap bond paper.

    Tamblyn's Home Instructor in Penmanship

Posted by Bob M. on Jan 2nd 2024

This is my favorite business and ornamental penmanship instruction book. It's printed on good paper and the print quality is excellent with crisp font and detailed images. The spiral binding allows it to lay flat on any page while reading or practicing drills. The instructions are detailed and easy to follow. This book also includes content on other hands beyond business and ornamental penmanship and a number of examples of Tamblyn's work. He was an incredibly talented penman every bit as good as the other greats of his time. Overall, I highly recommend this book. It's a fantastic resource and the closest we can get to having a penmanship instruction book from the golden age of American penmanship given nearly all others are no longer published. I also recommend Ziller's book series which stands on its own even though there is significant overlap between this book and the content in Ziller's series. I hope this review is helpful!

    Love this book

Love this book. It's style is not as time consuming as Spencerian and yet much prettier than Palmer's style. If you're interested, you couldn't do much better than this book. As for John Neal Books, I was thrilled to find this title in brand new condition and it was shipped in a timely manner and packed well. Highly recommended.
