Description

N204. Ink Cage Nib.

The revolutionary Ink Cage is a reservoir for pointed pen nibs. It allows you to write or flourish much longer before re-dipping. The Ink Cage is sold permanently attached to the nib of your choice. It is not removable or reusable.

- Use Ink Cage Nibs with fountain pen inks, calligraphy inks, sumi and India inks without shellac (check label on bottle or online sources), and thinned gouache or watercolor.
- Some inks may need to be thinned to work properly. Distilled water is recommended for this.
- Insert Ink Cage Nibs into penholders by grasping the sides of the nib to prevent damage to the Ink Cage.
- With Ink Cage Nibs you will write a great deal longer: 1-1/2 or twice as long as the nib without the Ink Cage, or perhaps longer.
- Provides more consistent flow, similar to working with a fountain pen
- For best performance with Sumi and waterproof inks, rinse in water occasionally while writing. How often depends on ink buildup.

Cleaning
- For water-based inks (non-waterproof), clean the nib by dipping it several times in a small jar of water.
- For cleaning heavier pigmented inks, add a small amount of pen cleaner (90% water/10% cleaner). Add Higgins, Speedball or Ziller Pen Cleaners to the water.
- Then, to dry, pat on a folded piece of paper towel, rolling the nib back and forth on both sides, being careful on the cage side.
- Some people use a small hair dryer to finish drying their nibs.
- You do not have to take the nib out of the holder to clean it.
- A little ink residue or staining in the cage area will not affect the nib's performance.
- Do not soak nibs in pure cleaning solution or use hot water to clean.
- Ultrasonic cleaners are not recommended for the Ink Cage Nibs.

    Ink Cage

I was surprised with how much more ink the nib held! You really should try one!

    Absolutely brilliant!

Posted by Carole on Dec 17th 2020

Though I love the regular Blue Pumpkin nib, I never use it because I can only write about one to two words with fountain pen ink ; the Brause EF66, with its small size, holds the ink so much better. I only just came across these nibs a week ago and had to try it out. With an ink cage, I was able to write a half a page with the Blue Pumpkin and fountain pen ink - would have been more except I got called away. I love this nib! The insert that comes with the nib warns that with normal ink, you should clean the nib out frequently and I expect that's true, but with fountain pen ink, it cleans out completely with just water.

These work great--I wish they were offered in a wide variety of nibs.

    Best nib on the planet

I LOVE this nib! It makes working on a project much less stressful. Never blobs, always smooth. Ordering a few more to have on hand. Well worth the money.

HUNT 101 with INK CAGE is SUPERIOR

Posted by Jake Bialos on Feb 15th 2018

Having purchased the HUNT 101 Nib with Ink Cage, I am happy to report complete satisfaction. Especially when executing long swooping flourishes or connecting script hand lettering, the cage gives one the advantage of a long line without having to refill. I have many nibs and love them all but the HUNT with Cage is just the most versatile for reliable, sensitive and extended calligraphy. I will certainly get more caged nibs when I order next... Worth the price for certain.

    Brause Rose w/ Ink Cage

Posted by Rebecca Lawrence on Feb 14th 2018

Lovely invention! Holds the ink in the nib for lines & lines! I'm not very clever w/ the Rose yet, but I sense it might be even more finicky w/o the cage to slow down the flow some - I've already managed to get it to blow out a blob, but it did so in a much more contained version than normally. Glad to have it.

    Excellent!

I have the Blue Pumpkin Nib + Cage and the Leonardt Principal Nib + Cage. I was able to write out three sentences with the Moon Palace Sumi ink with both nibs and didn't have to re-dip once! I highly recommend shelling out the extra few bucks for a nib with an ink cage, especially if you tend to write/draw quite a bit with your pointed pen.

    BEST NIB EVER!!

Posted by Janet Furr on Jan 26th 2017

I received this nib 2 days ago, but only began to try it out tonight. WOW!! Immediately it responded beautifully with shades and fine hairlines. No scratchiness, no dragging on the upstrokes, absolutely no blobbing! I've never had a nib that worked so perfectly out of the gate. I have tried the Brause Rose Cage, the EF Principal Cage and the Nikko G Cage, (and numerous regular pointed nibs) but had problems with most of them except for them except for the Rose Cage which eventually (with a bit of fine sandpaper) didn't catch on the upstrokes. If all nibs were as perfect as this Hunt 101 Cage, I would feel as if I were in Calligraphy Paradise!

    Get. it.

Got the titanium Zebra G and Hunt 101. THRILLED! I don't want to write with anything else--I can write lines and lines without dipping. The Zebra G hairlines are incredible. I feel like these make writing easy.
