Jesse Marsolais | Brush Kinetics, A Modern Look at Ancient Forms, or A Funny Thing Happened on the Way Back from the Forum
This class is designed to share insights into the formation of brush-drawn letters from the perspective and work experience of a modern letter carver. The goal is to absorb the basic principles of classical monumental brushwork and gradually move beyond the influence of Trajan’s Column without sacrificing any of its grace, vigor and timelessness. We will look at a wide variety of historical exemplars, including Rustica, and will consider how best to adapt these forms to give them a more contemporary personality. Students will be asked to bring a small collection of brief inspirational texts to serve as source material, as we will want to be using our brushwork for meaningful communication as quickly as possible.
CLASS SUPPLIES
For the sake of consistency for his students, Jesse prefers to bring all the supplies needed for successful results. For the $50 supply fee, he will have for each student:
• flat brushes in assorted sizes
• 40 ml jars of Nicker Poster Paint in various colors
• Roll of kraft paper
• Pad of newsprint
• Various other student needs
Students should bring a notebook and pen/ pencil for note-taking. Several pencils and at least an 18” ruler as well as a 12’’ ruler will ease line ruling. And bring along any other of your regular art supplies you care to pack.
