Joseph Lappie | The Book Bind-a-Palooza or How I Learned to Bind Dozens of Books in a Very Short Time

In this course, participants will learn many binding techniques, including, but not limited to Onesies, Pamphlets, Concertinas, Stab Binds, Drum Leaf, Long Stitches, Link Stitch, Coptic and multiple moveable fun alternatives that can be used for artist’s books or toys.

Variations will be explored to maximize potential ways of using the book. Hardcovers and softcovers are addressed to provide the possibility of a favorite bind for everyone. Additionally, a basic understanding of the history of the book in its many formats will be presented. 

CLASS SUPPLIES

• 1 ream of 70 lb 8.5” x 11” white Mohawk paper
• Sheets of 22” x 30” Stonehenge white paper
• Packet of 25 sheets of 8.5” x 11” colored paper (Canson preferred, but not necessary)
• 15” x 20.5” (pack of 4) binder’s board
• 5-10 decorative papers of students choice.
• 2” x 18” self-healing cutting mat (larger is ok)
• Small bone folder
• Small awl
• Set of straight binding needle
• Set of curved binding needle
• Binding thread
• 1-3 colored binding thread
• Beeswax
• 16 oz. PVA adhesive
• Glue Brush (thicker is better)
• roll of 3M 415 double stick tape (1/2”)
• Small binding clamps
• 18” ruler
