Description

PA112. Stillman & Birn Paper 8.5"x11" Packs.

These highly sought-after papers have both internal and surface sizing, making them ideal for calligraphy with pencil, pen or brush. The sizing keeps the ink/paint on the surface of the sheet -- you get vibrant colors, crisp edges, and no bleeding, and the paper withstands erasure well.

25-sheet pack of Stillman & Birn fine paper, 8.5"x11" sheets. Choose:
Alpha: White, Medium Grain, 150gsm.
Beta: White, Cold Press, 270gsm.
Delta: Ivory, Cold Press, 270gsm.
Epsilon: White, smooth finish, 150gsm.
Gamma: Ivory, Medium Grain, 150gsm.
Nova: 3 colors (Black, Beige, Grey), Medium Grain, 150gsm.
Zeta: White, Smooth finish, 270gsm.

The papers come in three surfaces.

Medium Grain: distinctive tooth, suitable for all dry media, and will also accept multiple washes.
Cold Press: Substantial tooth (but smoother than Cold Press watercolor paper), enhanced wet and tear strength, suitable for mixed-media artwork.
Smooth: Suitable for pen & ink, colored pencils, water-based markers as well as watercolors. Two weights: 150gsm and 270gsm.
For comparison: Arches Text Wove (120gsm); watercolor paper 90lb(185gsm), 140lb (300gsm).

The Gamma is similar to the now discontinued Diploma Parchment paper.

Great paper, unfortunate barcoded label on EVERY sheet

Posted by Sandra Austin on Jul 13th 2022

I love this paper -- it's heavy weight (270 gsm) and has a nice, toothy quality with no ink spread, so I found it very nice on which to write with dip or fountain pen. Unfortunately, out of a pack of 25 Zeta, 8.5 x 11 sheets, I was dismayed to find EVERY sheet had a barcoded sticky label adhered to it (in the corner.) These labels proved quite impossible to remove from the sheet without damaging the paper. I have no idea why this was done/- these were not even the full-size sheets. Needless to say, this made my calligraphy job unnecessarily time consuming. Worst case scenario, I had to cut down the paper to a smaller size which made my order a bigger waste of money. This was the first order in over 10 years that I had not been completely satisfied. I hope it will also be the last.
