Hand Drawn

Lettering is the "art of drawing letters." But I like to think of Lettering as the umbrella term for all things hand-lettered. Under that broad category, you'll find calligraphy, hand-drawn (which could include painted, chalked, marketed), digitally composed, constructed, cut out, etc. Our focus is on an area that has taken the design and advertising world by storm: hand-drawn. Hand-drawn lettering is everywhere and it's being done by illustrators, graphic designers, and yes, even calligraphers. These letters are often naive and loose, based on typography, and can be seen on everything from magazine covers to TV commercials. We'll look at how we can apply hand-drawn lettering to our personal work, looking at the hand-drawn lettering of Ben Shahn, David Jones, Imre Reiner, and more contemporary artists for inspiration.
