The Court of the Golden Room of Alhambra Palace, Spain, was named for the golden decorations on the wooden roof behind the portico during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs. Underneath the portico with three arches, the lower part of the walls is protected by T-shaped ceramic tiles with curvilinear sides. The focus of this class will be these mosaic tiles located around the semi-columns that support the archways.
As in most of the Alhambra, the tiles are in white, black, blue, green, and honey colored. Our composition in class will be based on a grid onto which we will superimpose a pattern, made up of pairs of concentric circles. The class will start with a quick introduction about drafting tools and how to use them. Once our pattern is constructed, we will study different ways of expanding it.
