Florals in Graphite; Blending Softness with Dramatic Flair with M. Joy Lemon
Friday, October 17, 2025
9am – 4pm
Discover the art of capturing florals in graphite, blending softness with dramatic flair. In this workshop, we will focus on the interplay of light over form, and how to achieve soft, blended graduations of value in graphite. I will walk you through the preparation of materials, block-in drawing techniques, mapping light and shadow shapes, and the process of turning form in order to create a drawing with depth and luminosity that will bring life to your botanical subject.
Supplies:
- 2-3 sheets of smooth white drawing paper or a pad of drawing paper, 9x12 or equivalent
- drawing board or rigid panel to adhere paper to (if not using a pad)
- white artist tape or drafting tape
- graphite pencils: 2H, HB, and 2B (recommend Staedtler Lumograph pencils or other professional brand)
- kneaded eraser
- micro (precision) stick eraser (Tombow Mono Zero), these are about 2mm width and very useful
- thin skewer or knitting needle for a sighting stick
- X-acto knife for sharpening (note: if traveling by air, bring the shaft and blades will be provided in class)
