• TOPIC: MONOGRAMS
Day 1: History & Foundations Objective: Understand the origins and basic construction of historical monograms. • Introduction to medieval monogram traditions (from manuscripts, royal seals, and guild marks) • Examples: Renaissance, Gothic, Baroque styles • Understanding structure: skeleton letters and grid usage • Proportion rules in medieval art (golden ratio, symmetry) • Basic exercises: sketching single letters with block and grid methods

Day 2: Decorative Techniques Objective: Learn to enrich monograms with period-specific ornamentation. • Flourishes in medieval design • Borders, frames • Introduction to gilding & raised effects (history and modern adaptations) • Practice: create a 2-letter monogram draft with flourishes

Day 3: Color, Gilding & Illumination Objective: Apply traditional decorative finishes to monograms. • Medieval color palettes • Illumination techniques: gilding, raised gesso, and pattern work • Negative space design and readability in ornate layouts • Hands-on: refine a 2–3 letter monogram with painted details (e.g., vines, filigree)

Day 4: Final Composition & Modern Applications Objective: Complete a finished piece with modern adaptation. • Review and critique of drafts • Adding finishing touches: highlights, shading, white-line ornamentation • Digitization overview (scanning & vectorizing medieval monograms)
