Balsa sticks have been a familiar tool to me since I began my exploration of abstract calligraphy. This course begins with rhythmic stamping exercises to get used to the tool. We create alphabet letters with the tool and then explore the possibilities of calligraphic lines created by writing words and lines. Within that framework, we will explore more abstract mark making through play with the flow of ink and water. In addition, we will try using a wide flat brush as an extension of the balsa stick, and combining thin strokes to play with bleeding ink.
We will examine what can be done with this natural tool derived from wood, and try to see how much emotion we can convey.
