Description

N90. Brause Blue Pumpkin (Steno 361).

The Brause Steno is also called Brause 361 or the Blue Pumpkin nib, from its rounded shape and blue color. It look likes and basically writes like the Hiro 40 (also called Blue Pumpkin), but the Brause Steno is stiffer, better made, and gives thinner hairlines and is more beginner friendly. Some calligraphers find it also holds more ink than Hiro 40 and that it works better with thicker inks like sumi and not as well with thinner inks like Pelikan 4001. The Brause Steno has moderate flex, and needs but a little pressure for shaded strokes. While suitable for Copperplate, it may be now used more often for Modern Calligraphy. Excluding the "G" pens, Brause Steno nibs last much longer than most other current pointed nibs.

The Brause Steno is the "SECOND FAVORITE overall nib" of Shinah of Crooked Calligraphy. She notes that it "holds a good amount of ink" and has a "rounder tip—so it works on rougher surfaces." Shinah discusses in more detail her five favorite nibs (Nikko G, Brause Steno, Brause 66EF, Leonard Hiro 41, and Hunt 101) here:  https://www.crookedcalligraphy.com/blog/choosing-calligraphy-nibs.

This is a marvelous instrument with which to render pen and ink images. It puts the pen in pen and ink.

    Almost Perfect

This is an excellent nib for flourishing and drawing. However, there's a couple of things to be aware of. With thinner inks, it has a tendency to distribute all its ink with the slightest pressure, and it uses a lot of ink.

    My favorite nib for drawing

Posted by Nancy H on Dec 14th 2021

This is my favorite nib. The nib is full of flex and line variation is super easy. I use it for inking drawings. I'm not a calligrapher.

Brause Steno (Blue Pumpkin) is a great nib

Posted by angela on Dec 13th 2021

This is a great nib with plenty of flex. If you are doing thick downstrokes that this nib allows, you need to constantly dip it in ink--it runs out quickly. This is to be expected, but I'm going to do more careful prep on a new nib to remove the coating and see if it will then hold more ink.

    Brause Steno is a joy

Posted by Jeffery P. on Dec 10th 2021

I purchased this nib with the Nikko G, the Nikko was stiffer than I wanted--the pressure required to create the thicker strokes was too much for me. The Brause Steno has a delightful flex--doing calligraphy with it is a joy.
