Description

Blackletter, in its Renaissance forms, may be one of the scripts that lends itself most to decoration and countless variations. Gothic capitals in particular, lend themselves to decoration and even more to abstract compositions based on the balance between letters alone, creating very contrasting, strong and striking images.

We will try to rewrite together the capitals of textura, fraktur and rotunda, with different flat-tipped tools, including unconventional ones, stretching and enlarging them, starting from very fine strokes to extrabold. A workshop that opens incredible expressive possibilities to Gothic letters due to their extreme versatility.

A workshop for those who want to delve into a very fascinating aspect of a script that has spanned the centuries attracting thousands of letter enthusiasts.

The workshop includes hands-on demonstrations and corrections of exercises submitted by students.

Supply List:

Paper
- 1 block of A3 layout paper (Canson XL purple cover), or good quality calligraphy paper, no more than 120g thick, as the paper should be transparent enough to see the guidelines. The paper should not be too shiny/patinated nor too rough or absorbent. You need to get crisp letters. Give it a try first! (P2012)
- Some larger sheets of good quality paper for working with larger tools. (PS01, PS107)

Brushes & Pigment
- You can try writing with a flat brush for extraordinary effects by taking advantage of flexibility and pressure. A size of cirac 2-3 cm is recommended, with a slightly rough paper, and gouache in any color you like but that has good contrast (for example, white gouache on black paper, or rather dark colors on white paper) Daler & Rowney, Da Vinci or similar brands are fine. (BR01, BR103, WNG1, HG749)

Pens
- 1 Parallel pen Pilot (blue cap/green cap) and black/dark ink cartridges.(FP67, FP70)
- Automatic pen #4/#5 (N27)

Ink
- 1 bottle of black ink (Parker Quink, Pelikan 4001 or Higgins Eternal, (avoid cheap inks or "calligraphy inks") (I04, I08)

NB: It is not necessary to buy ALL the materials recommended here. If you think you just want to practice on the shapes, the Parallel Pen you have and the layout paper will be fine. If, on the other hand, you want to try the nib or the Automatic Pen, and a higher quality paper to start working on a final, get these too. The use of these tools will also be covered during the workshop.
