Spencerian Script, or Ornamental Penmanship, is the beautiful, flourished style of writing that was developed in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Over a century later, it is still admired for its delicate and exquisitely graceful forms - the lyrical lowercase and the dramatic and expressive capitals. This introductory course will begin with an explanation of the best tools to use, the basic characteristics of the alphabet, and the finger and muscle movements needed to achieve its delicate grace. A study of the fundamentals of shading and forms and movement of the hairline flourishes will round out the class. This study is based on “Lessons in Ornamental Penmanship” by E.A.Lupfer, the reference used in the Iampeth Certificate Program, and is a good start to your studies in this area. It will be followed by a more extensive study offered by Michael Sull. The class is offered in 3 parts over 3 days, leaving time to practice the strokes between classes. Feedback will be offered in class and questions answered. We want as close to a live experience as possible!
