Stone Letter Carving 101 by Paul Herrera – Level: (B) Beginner

This is a beginner’s course on letter cutting in stone. No previous experience required. Instruction will take the student from brush writing to an 8 x 10-inch slate that is fully prepared for inscription cutting. A stone cutting instruction booklet will be provided. Our step-bystep approach will include:
• Brush manipulation
• Inscription design for beginners
• Tools and their care
• Understanding slate structure
• Stone surface preparation
• Design transfer
• First cuts with mallet and chisel

Class Supplies

• A design of no more than 4 letters or 5 numerals (i.e. House address)
• (PL38) #2 lead pencil
• (S5000-ColorWheel) Apron
• Small dust brush
• (S189-5) Gold leaf (optional). We will not have gold leaf for sale.

The following supplies will be PROVIDED:

• One piece of slate
• Mallet and Chisel
• Lettering brushes
• Layout paint
• Gold size
• Miscellaneous tools
• Additional stones are available for an added charge
