B4349. The Ins and Outs of Public Lettering: Kindersley Inscriptions in the Open by Marcus Waithe, Lida Lopes Cardozo Kindersley and Thomas Sherwood. 2020. 108pp. 5.5"x6.8". Hardcover

The subject of this book is the Kindersley Workshop's public face: lettering in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The book begins with David Kindersley's street-lettering, one of his greatest contributions to the environment in Great Britain and the Commonwealth. There follows a study of public lettering, illustrated by a wide variety of examples. These include the British Library gates, the frieze of the Wellcome Building, and the Francis Crick Institute amongst others in London; and many works on buildings elsewhere, such as the Ruskin Gallery in Sheffield, St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh, and various in Cambridge. Featured also are gravestones or memorials for Richard III, William Blake, Stephen Hawking, and Barbara Hepworth; with more in St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and across Britain -- numerous inscriptions out in the open for all to see. Dr. Marcus Waithe shows how a site -- whether a street, a building exterior or interior, a churchyard, or any open space -- is enhanced by the right choice and design of letterform.
