The Poetic Pen Masterclass is a special course designed to enhance your practice and understanding of Italian Hand. This extensive study class will share insights from historic writing masters as well as mentors who have influenced my own practice of Italian Hand. The student will be guided in developing the shaded nuances of the lowercase, capitals and flourished letters before progressing toward a fully decorated Poetic Page design. The study of Italian Hand is a valuable key to unlocking all other script hands. Described as playful, joyful, and exuberant by its early writing masters, Italian Hand reaches back to the first decade of the1600’s with Italic roots and was prominently used in a script form until the mid 1860’s. The hand is infused with many European influences that will be studied in this course. A careful practice of this script will drastically lighten your touch with the pointed pen. During this Masterclass we will deepen our understanding and appreciation of this whimsical hand while finding a way to make the script our own. The goal of this class is not to copy a historic hand but to help unlock its mysteries and bring it forward into this century. You will understand how to study, research, and extract the important nuances of this graceful hand as you find your rhythm of writing. Italian Hand has been the most eye-opening script I have ever studied, and I am passionate about sharing the lessons I have learned along the way. The course is presented with four teaching sessions and four feedback sessions designed to help refine your practice. Expect lots of writing and intriguing homework in this class. The key to progressing with this gorgeous script hand is dedicated practice and training observant eyes. I am so excited to accompany you on this wonderful journey into Italian Hand as we explore the Poetry of this engaging script.

- Flexible Pointed Pen: Brause 66 EF, Leonardt EF Principle, Hunt 101 or Gillott 303 (N70, N120, N77)
- Practice Ink: McCaffrey Black, Sumi Vermillion, or Walnut Ink. Fountain pen inks are suitable for practice. Heather recommends Sailor Manyo or Sailor Studio (I37, I163, S449)
- Size A4 Layout Paper. Heather prefer Daler Rowney. You may substitute your favourite practice paper or graph paper, but you should be able to see to see guidelines through it (P32, P09)
- Lined paper, either Rhodia or Apica Lined Journal (P54)
- Pencil, Ruler, Eraser, Note taking supplies, Paper towel, Water dish, Two paper clips (PL38, PL21, S270, E13, S1005)
- Cardstock for writing projects, either 5’x7’ size or A4 size. A few sheets in a light colour and a few sheets in any dark colour
- 9’x12’ Water color or Bristol Smooth Paper for final project (P110)
- Optional: A few coloured pencils, metallic watercolour, watercolour supplies and Sakura Clear Stardust Gelly roll pen for embellishment, gilding supplies (PL58, S1000, M96-2)
- Bleed proof white with mixing brush and water dish for practice on dark cardstock (I38, BR02, S1005)
